I'm leaving my current job in a few weeks and am owed a fail bit of holiday pay so am planning on blowing a bit of it on upgrading my PC.

Am currently running a P4 2.6, nVidia 5700, 1gb RAM and for general day to day web type stuff it's fine but I fancy giving PC gaming a go again and it's a bit noisy for my liking.

Looking to spend £600 and already have monitor (20" widescreen Dell) and a load of good quality PSUs, hard disks and optical drives so really just after the bare essentials. I'd like the machine to be reasonably quick but as quiet as possible.

So far I've come up with:

Antec P180 Advanced Super Midi Tower Case
£93.94
Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB)
£129.19
Abit AB9 Pro (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
£111.57
BFG GeForce 7900 GT OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)
£180.89

I'm not sure if the gfx card will be too noisy and am after a GB of RAM if anyone can recommend some. Also after a good quality, quiet CPU heatsink/fan but have no idea what's good nowadays.

I await your wisdom....

The extra £20 wouldn't be an issue (the £600 is a target rather than a limit) but I'm way out of date of GFX cards so is the 1900XT a better card? The 1900GT with the silent cooling looks tempting but I'm guessing performance isn't as good.

The Gigabyte DS3 and DS4 motherboards are probably better for overclocking.

I'd aim for 2gb Ram as it is very cheap now, Geil Value DDR2 6400 or Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400C5 TwinX is probably what I would go for, the Geil is on This Week Only at the moment.

The X1900XT is a far better graphics card and it doesn't have the reliability problems that have affected some 7900gt cards.

As for CPU cooling, maybe a socket 775 Zalman cooler?
