I have the following:
i7 2700k OC'd to 4.7 @ 1.27v / 5.0 @ 1.30v
1 x HD 7950 twin frozr, at stock but will be OC'd to max.
2 x Crucial m4 SSD's
1 X D5 vario pump.
1 x lamptron touch fan controller.
2 x 3mm xspc twin leds
5 x scythe gentle typhoon fans 1850rpm
4 x usb 2/3.0 devices using mobo power
1 x external dvd/rw using usb power from mobo
1 x keyboard

before you ask, yes i have used the various psu calculators out there and keep ketting inconsistent results. they vary from 450 - 580W.
curent psu is a seasonic platinum 1000w. over kill but i bought it anyway, the power switch on it is defective and has problems powering the pc up. this time i would like to buy something a bit more 'sensible' so hence asking here.
moslty used for gaming and video conversion as well as daily pc tasks.
Thanks.

How old's the Seasonic?

That's a mighty nice PSU. Probably one of the best you could buy I'd guess, and 1000W will run nearly anything you throw at it lol.

Might be worth seeing if they'll fix it for you or maybe offer you a voucher for money off or something?

Seasonic and Antec (Seasonic internals) are generally considered the best.

Either of these would do the job. Unless you're planning to go Crossfire later on?

YOUR BASKET
1 x Antec High Current Gamer 520W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £59.99
1 x Seasonic S12II 520W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £59.99

The seasonic is only about 18 months old, if that. i have however voided the warranty by taking the fan out and spraying it.

Would 520W be sufficient you reckon? No plans to crossfire, im not that big of a gamer tbh.

I would keep the current psu if it was me. You won't get anything better :)

As good as it is, it does not work. i have to toggle the power switch on the back of psu on and off, even then its not a case of straight forward toggling on and off, i have to 'balance' the switch between the on and off positions where it makes contact eventually an powers up. As i do this, sometimes, you can hear the electricity crackling away....so i dont want to ruin the rest of the components..especially a Gigabyte Z77X UP7 mobo

Might have to see how much and how long a repair might take.

Sounds like it's just the rocker switch that's gone.

As you've opened the unit and voided the warranty anyway maybe see if you can get a replacement, if you're comfortable doing that sort of thing.

I am comfortable, but im not really sure how easy it will be to get hold of the part. any ideas?

Not sure, perhaps a Google with the model number of the PSU, failing that perhaps open the PSU again and see if the switch has any identifying marks or numbers on it.

CPC.co.uk have hundreds of that type of switch. It doesn't necessarily need to be an exact replacement as long as it's the same specification, fused/un-fused and AMP rating.

An exact one would be easier obviously because it would fit the hole nicely but you might be able to find one with similar dimensions.

Edit: Just had a thought, as it's only 18 months old it might still be worth contacting Seasonic explaining the situation and asking if they could send you out a switch, seeing as spraying the fan would unlikely have done anything to cause the switch to stop working properly?

Edit 2: If you do go this route after replacing the switch, connect a fan to one of the molexes and short out any 2 green and black cables on the 24 pin ATX motherboard connector (a paper clip works well for this). Then flick the new rocker switch just to make sure everything works as expected. Don't want to damage any components unnecessarily :)

P.S. if you decide it's too much hassle and are going to bin it, please send the PSU to me instead :p ;)

Appreciate the advice mate cheers. i think i will see if i can pull the switch out and see if there are some part numbers first, if not i will give Walter (Seasonic Eu rep) a bell and see if he can get a switch out to me.

Lol. Its a £200 PSU powering a 'then' £270 CPU and £300 MOBO plus other bits n bobs....i think its worth the effort to repair it first.

I would say it's definitely worth a repair job and a quick test before reconnecting. It's a relatively new, top of the line PSU.

Even if he can't send you a switch he might be able to give you a part number for one?
