Yet another "recommend me an ISP" thread

Hi all,

I've finally got sick of Pipex's FUP. On my line (which is limited to ~1Mb due to the distance to my exchange - verified with neighbours) I get ~20-25 Kbs downloads. That's about 25% of what I should get. And it's ALL the time (as I only use my pc evenings and weekends). So, time to move on.
I'm looking for an ISP with no "traffic shaping" etc for about £15 p/m. So far I've noticed NewNet & Namesco

What are they like (recommendation and personal testimony welcomed) and are there any othersout there?

Cheers

Chris

Jump to Nildram?

No problems with torrents here mate I am on Nildram.

You get a 50GB cap that applies 8am - midnight, off peak it's unlimited.

-edit-

Just seen your budget, if you don't mind 512K/256K, efhbroadband.com are quite good.

Nildram is Pipex. Avoid.

I'd recommend Virgin Media M Broadband if you live in a cabled area.

Yes but Nildram aren't throttling in the same way as Pipex.

Actually, they are. I know people using both and they all report identical issues.

I'm on Newnet and they are fantastic. Great customer support. I've spoken to Peter Milford before and he was a very helpful chap. They are also very honest and release statistically data about their company when asked.

Though the recent price hike may put you off a little but your pay for what you get for and its worth it.

ADSL24 or any Entanet reseller and you cant go wrong really. As an ex Nilly user I can confirm they do shape the same as Pipex ;)

UKFSN seem to be a favourite at the moment. One thing I don't like though

Customers who exceed their allowance will be charge the rate for the allowance level used plus a £5+VAT charge.

I'd rather them drop the speed to 64kbps or pull the plug than charge me like that, what happens if I am on holiday and unable to monitor my traffic?

Also "charge" should be "charged"

Why would you be using your connection if you were on holiday?

My interpretation of that is that you'll be charged the monthly fee appropriate for the usage. That is if (grabbing figures out of the air) you're on a 60Gb peak tarrif for £30 but you use 65Gb then you'll get charged at the 90Gb rate - say £40 plus the £5 "fine". So £45 for the month rather than £30.

See if you can get be* (bethere.co.uk). Also raise a fault with pipex because those sort of speeds indicate a fault on the line (I had one recently and was limited to 1/2 meg until I reported it).

Torrents, Servers - which I mainly keep up whist away. I just don't like the way if you go over you could be automatically charaged for it, I'd rather them suspend you and IF YOU want to you can pay and continue.

Nildram do it so if you hit the cap you drop down to 64kbps which is still good enough for browsing, emails, etc and if you want you can pay the money and get more on your cap for that month.

I'm pretty sure there might be an option in the MyControls on the site to change this or a phone call might fix it. Does the MyControls on the site allow you to see how much you've used?

Eclipse seem fine :)

I'm with them and have nothing but trouble. Slow speeds, constant disconnects and Packet shaping 18 hours of the day if thats what u call fine :p

Going to be leaving for a Entanet reseller when my contract runs out :)
