I know how to put on a private plate onto a car, can do it online etc.

But how would you take an existing private plate off a car and then put on another private plate? I know you can transfer the first plate, put it on retention online, send in the paperwork, wait for the new/updated paperwork to arrive and then go through the same process for the second plate.

Each time notifying the insurance company but surely there must be an easier, less time consuming way of doing this? I’ve read that it might be possible by posting in the forms but then at what point does the current plate switch over etc. Don’t want to drive around with the wrong plate etc.

Why do you need to send in any paperwork if you're doing it all online?

Surely you put your current private plate on retention (online), you will then have a regular plate for a brief moment. You then assign your other private plate to the car (online) and you then tell your insurer, with certainty, what your current plate is.

Or am I missing something?

After making the first transfer you then have to send in the V5 for them to update. You then and this is as far as I know wouldn’t be able to make the 2nd change until you have the updated V5.

Do it online.

You just remove a plate and assign a plate to new car. Same day same time.

Online is all instant.

Then call your insurance and update them and in a few days you'll get new v5.

Put the existing private plate on retention.
Wait a week for new V5 to arrive in the post.
Assign new private plate to the car.
???
Profit.

You'll need to tell your insurer each time, that's unavoidable but many have online portals you can use to make things easier. The decent ones won't charge you an admin fee just to switch plates out. The plate change is effective immediately when you press Done on the DVLA site, but I drove around with the wrong plates for a couple of weeks (insurance had the correct plate) with zero issues.

I've done this a few times in work. You'll get a reference number when a plate is taken off a vehicle (after paying £80) which can be used to put the plate onto the new car. Can be done in a matter of minutes, you can wait for a new V5c and V778 which usually takes 1-2 weeks.

You can put it on a different car, sure. You can't put a new plate on the car you've just taken one off though.
yes you can? I literally did that.

took plate of my mx5 and put it on my s2000.

mx5 then had it's old plate assigned and s2k had its new plate assigned.

took a few minutes and £80.

I know that the above can be done but how then would you then put another plate on the mx5? Wait until the V5 comes through?

That's not what I said though ;)

I said you wouldn't be able to take a private plate off the MX5 and put a different private plate back on the same car.

Quick update in case it might help. I warned my son not to believe that the DVLA might have some intelligence but he ignored me and went along with what the reg transfer place he purchased the plate from told him. They told him to do everything via post, fill in the appropriate form and ask for the current plate to put on retention, enclose the V5, then in the same envelope ask for the new plate to be taken off retention and to be put back on the car. According to the reg transfer plate they've done this many times and it should work.

Yesterday my son received his new V5 with the very original plate that the car was registered with, nothing else. So he spoke to the DVLA, they currently have no idea where the retention cert for his old private plate is and more worrying, they have no idea what has happened to the new plate and retention cert "they can't find it on their system".

It was however a chance to say "I told you so". If he had listened to me and put his current plate on retention using the postal method, then straight after receiving the new V5 gone online and put his new plate onto the car that same day he wouldn't be faced with the problems and more importantly the issue related around insurance as he now has to notify his insurance of the change of plate and when DLVA sort the mess out he'll have to make yet another change.

Simply because doing it via the post means that you only need to do an insurance change once else online as it’s immediate you’d have to do it twice. For my sons policy it’s £50 a pop to make a change.
