Hello,

I am about to foray into the world of building my own pc, I haven’t done it for years and things have changed quite a bit. Below are the components that I hope to be buying, and I need to keep below a £1900 (ish) budget so that I won’t feel outdated for a very long time and to have been able to finally get a system that will kick some azz.

Intel Core 2 DUO LGA775 E6600 2.40GHz Retail / Asus P5B Deluxe / 2GB GeIL PC2-6400C4 DDR2 Dual Channel Kit - Bundle (nice looking bundle, MB seems to have all I need on it, would have preferred an nVidia 680i chipset, but frankly, OCUK don’t have a bundle with one)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (to make the system up to 4gb ram)
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) (do I need to say why I went for this?  )
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 400GB ST3400620AS SATA-II 16MB Cache (went for this due to the rave reviews and it is reputedly pretty reliable, and fast – this will the one for storage)
Western Digital Raptor 74GB WD740ADFD 10,000RPM SATA 16MB Cache (purely for speed with the games)
Samsung SH-182MRSMN 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (x2)
Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS Aluminium Midi-Tower Case (it has good reviews, and this seems respectable for the price)
Hiper HPU-4K580-MK Type R 580W Modular ATX2.2 PSU
Logitech Cordless G7 Gaming-Grade Laser Mouse (just because)
Logitech G15 Gaming-Grade Illuminated Keyboard (pure indulgence)
Dell E228WFP 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor (seems like a good balance for quality, price and reliability .. the 4 yr warranty is the kicker though)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit Edition DVD

I wonder if anyone might be able to give me some tips on how these components might run together, specifically the hard drives with the Asustek P5B Deluxe MB. As you can see I have selected one SATA and one SATA II HDD. I have checked and the P5B does support SATA, but can anyone tell me whether I can go for this configuration?

Any responses would be graciously appreciated.

Thank you

I'm unsure about the sata question, but I'd say maybe look at getting a better PSU. Have heard a few horror stories on here about Hipers going wrong, I've never experienced anything bad with mine but I've never had many power hungry components going through it.
You say you would have preferred the 680 chipset, why don't you just order the parts separately instead of opting for a bundle?

I would suggest going for old and trusted with your PSU. Hipers are from a new company, and anecdotally have been suffering from quite a few failures.

I am an Enermax man myself, but Seasonic and Corsair* are the current favourites here in these forums.

*Corsairs are just upspecc'ed and rebadged Seasonics.

If you want the real dope the chaps here seem to have dragged every PSU backwards through a hedge and know what they are talking about

Thank you for the responses. To clarify, the mb does support SATA, but I cannot see if it does actually support SATA II. And, if it does, would a SATA hdd and a SATA II hdd be able to be run together on this board (I am sorry if this is an obvious and basic question to you guys)

The reason I went for a PCU/mb/ram bundle was so that i could save a few pennys, and to be honest I couldn't find a 680 mb at areasonable price

I shall revise my choice of PSU.

Thanks again

SATA and SATA II drives will work side by side in perfect harmony on SATA I or SATA II boards. Forward and backward compability all round.

And don't worry about asking simple questions... they are the only ones I can answer and look good ;)

Agreed with the psu bit. Whatever you do don't get a Hiper. There ahve been quite a few blown/failed on here this week alone, amd several dozen more over the past three months or so.

Best off going with the likes of Seasonic, Corsair, OCZ.
