Yet another stupid idea from Facebook

Facebook is a product of who you have added, if it appears as a cesspit to you, that's more than likely down to your own social circles ;)

If it was someone you know, you'll probably have their phone number or email address, or just meet him in person if he's local. Why does everyone think that life is revolved around Facebook?

And the children are now in the thread.
I was getting worried that a user of a social network site wasn't ****ging off another social network site in this thread.

You are comparing facebook to a computer forum? i really do not see the similarity.. ocuk forums are not a social networking site, you cannot even private message people! You post comments and questions and get to discuss topics with likeminded people that you do not know and are not your friends. Facebook is built around the friend list, and not the semi annonymous forum type concept.

Facebook is for people who either run a business and have to be on it to "be in the loop" or people who think that their life is so important they have to broadcast each and every little thought or deed to everyone they know, and often a lot of people they dont know.

I dont know about you but i actually phone, or spend time with my friends. Facebook is for those who like to hide behind a keyboard and more likely, for those who like to think they have more friends than they actually have!

I know of people ( friends of my mrs mostly ) who think that the universe starts and ends on that ruddy blue page!.... its laughable how it controls and ruins lives, rumors and bullying are so easy to do on there.

Tell someone you use pcs and are not on FB and they look at you like you just climbed out of the cess pit!

Well said Atreus.

Local friends = see them down at your local or at your/their house
Distant friends = instant chat, email and phone

Remember, email, phone and chat have always been around in the last few decades. Facebook won't always be around. 10 years ago, it was all about Friends Reunited, 5 years ago, it was all about Faceparty, and in 5 years time, something else will have taken over FB.

Yes absolutely, complete with spec me threads, how do I do this threads, what gadget to have threads and my partner left me threads.
The only difference is on one you know people and on the other the people are faceless.

Yes they are, complete with spec me a place to eat, my partner left me and so on ......

I don't fit into any of those categories so you are completely wrong.
My main use is a 'forum' where like minded old musicians get together and discuss the old days and another 'forum' that discusses local gigs.
Once again virtually everybody on there are people I know in REAL LIFE and who I can't discuss a particular topic with in any other way other than FB.
I suppose you could do that Blackberry thing where everybody is on the phone at the same time so you must be really lucky if you can do that.

Y

See above.
You are really lucky if you can get upwards of 50 people all together at the same time on your phone to discuss a particular topic which could be 'Did anybody see Van Halen supporting Black Sabbath at the Victopria Hall in the late 70s?'.

You are the one knocking Facebook when you obviously don't know how useful it can be.

Like I said, the children are in the thread.

Yet another stupid idea from Facebook! They have started banning people from adding friends! They banned me for 7 days for adding someone THEY suggested (and have mutual friends) and a few of my friends have been it by this!

SORT IT OUT FACEBOOK OR YOU'LL FIND LOADS OF PEOPLE LEAVING!

seems like a good idea to me - presumably someone reported you - WTF were you doing adding random people you don't know/barely know in the first place?

I've got friends who've moved all over the world and friends from all over the world... geographical barriers prevent me from spending time with them, a busy life and different time zones prevent me from skyping with them regularly and international phone calls are expensive... tis still nice to see the occasional updates from them on my news feed - its also nice to stay in touch with people I'm not as close with any more - people from school, uni etc.. who were more acquaintances and who I don't see often.

Tis also more convenient for organising events like birthday parties etc... even amongst say 10-15 close friends I am still in regular contact with.
As for people I'm not in contact with often - am meeting up with some old army mates in a couple of months some of whom I've not seen for a few years... all organised through facebook. I likely wouldn't have any contact details for some of these people if It wasn't for the fact we'd added each other and arranging a get together would involve lots of phone calls between the few people I was still in contact with an seeing who's everyone else was still in contact with etc...

And lastly - Girls!... girl you hooked up with at uni moves to London... appears on news feed... I wasn't in regular contact with her but she appreciated the message to meet up. Another Girl I dated a few times two years previously and who's still on profile updates status from in relationship to 'single'... turned out it was very worthwhile dropping her a message and asking how things were going etc... :D

Point is - 'social networking'.... keeps you in contact with a few more people than just the same group you hang out with/phone up all the time. Sure if you lived at home with your parents after the age of 18 and never left the same small town you grew up in then its a bit pointless.... for people with a wider social network than that then a social networking site is obviously quite useful.

Still a load of bull poo, it's only a tool built to target certain audiences with a lot of true advertisements..

Well isn't that what this forum does?
But we still use it, we still appreciate it, we come here almost everyday to socialise with other people whether we personally know them or not.

This is where everybody is just being plain stupid, blabbing on about how terrible facebook is when this forum is very similar indeed.

that pretty much describes just about any money making website out there... at the end of the day most commercial websites* exist to generate hits and bring in ad revenue... whether google or facebook or some affiliate site run out of some kid's bedroom

*not talking about websites selling actual products here but websites trying to make money from the site/contents of the site itself
