Sorry about this;

Budget £700-£900, can stretch.
Gaming, 1680x1050.

Motherboard

A decent X38 motherboard? Been looking at this; It supports both DDR3 and PCI-E 2.0, which is ideal.

Gigabyte GA-X38T-DQ6

Is it worth getting the X48 motherboard instead?

Why is there no motherboard that mentions SLI, only Crossfire, is SLI a given?

Processor

No details for 45nm Penryn Wolfdale yet I assume?

Graphics Card

This will be sort of temporary till the 9 series is released, then sold on or kept as spare.

There are far to many 8800GT's for me to choose from, please assist.

RAM

Is DDR3 worth the money? Will be using 64bit Vista.

Power Supply

Must be high enough to allow me to upgrade to Yorkfield processors and a 9 series.

DVD-RW Drive

This one is 3+ years old, replace it please.

PCI Wireless Network Card

I have this router and currently using a USB one, I hates USB.

Cooling + Case

Clueless on this, don't really care about noise or looks, as long as its a cooooold.

Would like a really good CPU cooler that will fit a 45nm Penryn 'Wolfdale' and suitable for overclocking a bit.

Hard Drive(s)

Think 250gb should be enough, haven't got a clue about brand.

Motherboard: I'm going against expensive motherboards, I would get a P35 - something like the Asus P5K.

Can't see one that supports PCI-E 2.0 or DDR3, I want to future proof all I can.

Are Gigabyte a recommend brand?

SLI - only on the nvidia motherboards at present. As 680i won't support quad penryns, I'd steer clear. In fact, I would avoid SLi configs unless you have deep pockets and money to burn. And even then I'd rather buy a declining football club than invest in SLi.

Crossfire - see SLi last sentence above.

Wasn't intending on going SLI or Crossfire, waste of time, as you said. Just curious :)

Processor: Penryn quads are March at the earliest, and will be expensive. Get a q6600.

Penryn Quads are Yorkfields and delayed till March, a defect caused the delay. Hopefully the Wolfdales will be release late Jan/Feb. Will post when they are released.

GFX: Leadtek 8800 GT - It has the larger quieter cooler fan, and is on special.

Thanks :)

RAM: No, DDR3 is as sensible as gold plating a chocolate teapot.

Ok thanks, which brand for DDR2. 4GB enough/too much?

PSU: Corsair 620W

DVD: Pioneer sata

Cooling: TT with blue fan, 'tis on special.

Case: Akasa Eclipse or Lian Li of your choice. Antec P180/182 a sensible alternative.

Hard Drive: Samsung Spinpont 500GB sata 2. Quieter than a monk with a vow of silence creeping around a library in soft shoes. Pretty fast too.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks, noted all these down.

Will be getting one of those, depending on service packs for Vista.

Anything that can be improved in the that spec? Bearing in mind I need up to £200 for a processor.

Ah right, would have thought it would be backwards compatible.

Can't find a DSC3, only a DS3R which has both DDR2 and DDR3, but no PCI-E 2.0.

Is this what I'm looking for?

Would that work and fit with everything mentioned above?

What's the Antec 182 like for fitting, heard you have to do some DIY because of the PSU is at the bottom, and the cables can't reach.
