Ok, my brother in law has been told by work he needs a car. They have given him upto £16,000. The only problem is, it has to be brand new. They won't let him get anything used, not even a 6 month old car :(

Requirements

  • Family sized
  • Preferably diesel
  • Brand new

So, what do fellow forumites recommend?

Cheers

I've mentioned the Mondeo to him this afternoon. He never really considered one before but he is going to look :)

The list prices are insane but by buying a brand new car from a broker, he can afford to get a top of the range model.

Make sure he doesnt look at an LX and base his decision on that.

Assuming he can spend £16000 at the very most, he needs to look at a 2.2 TDCi Titanium X. This is the absolute top of the range non Sports model with absolutely everything inc air conditioned seats. The ST TDCi is more sporty, looks better with full ST220 bodykit, but has half leather seats and is unfortunately £600 over budget.

Note the list price of the Titanium X TDCi is £21995 - you can get them BRAND NEW and main dealer supplied for under £16k from Broadspeed.com. When he goes to the Ford dealer, if he wants a proper look and a drive he needs to tell them he wants to spend about £22k as they'll only deal around list price. If he says he has £16k to spend they'll show him an LX.

I challenge any of you to find a better specified, better all round brand new car for £15700 than a 2.2 155 Titanium X TDCi Mondeo.

That won't even buy a BMW 116i with steel wheels and no aircon. The Mondeo offers so much more for the money, for context, the equivilent 5 door Golf would be a 1.9 TDI 105 PS Sport 5 door at just over £15k (It's the best sub £16k 5 door Golf). This is CONSIDERABLY slower, it's smaller, it has nowhere near the equipment level of the Mondeo and is an inferior car in almost every way.

A new Mondy for £15700 is one hell of a bargain!

However, I'd be looking to see what used BMW I'd be able to get for £15700!

I know where I'd spend my money.

Good bargain that Fox but no matter how much you pimp the mondeo and how much they i change i personally never find them a nice car. Ive been in two over the last year, both under 2 years old and top specs but i just didnt like them.

I was in one when the driver had a blow out and put us into a hedge @ about 40mph (faulty tyre). Wrote it off, bloody airbags never deployed though until about 30 secs after the accident. It was like a scene from a comedy sketch :D

At this time of night (and, most other times!) I did'nt read the whole thread... :o

Anyway, why have a new Ford for the money of a Used BM?

As its going to be a company car i would imagine its to do with reliability, warrenty, service costs, image and then sell on value??

if its a company car won't 16k be his max P11d value? Look at lists prices not broker prices

This was sadly true with my mum. She could not go through a broker. She settled on a Jetta 1.9tdi SE, it was a step up from the golf from my inspection :) Beware though, lead times are 3 months atm.

Skoda Octavia 2.0TDI Ambiente. (might even be able to get a sport in there depending where you get it from).

Worth a test drive tbh.

it ticks the right boxes as a family car....once theres a pram in the boot of the golf theres no room for anything else...you could get a buggy for quads in the boot of an octavia and still have room left for all the rest of the crap that goes with kids..get the estate and its even better

140bhp 2.0 pd engine is very nice...bags of mid range power
