Yet another "What Laptop" thread

I keep going round in circles looking at different laptops so would like some opinions on what I'm currently thinking of getting vs the competition.

The main uses will be for the usual web, e-mail, video/dvd watching. Thinking a 15.6" screen would be the best size to go for. Things that are important for me are: reliability, build quality, battery life, HDMI-out. With those things in mind, it looks like either Asus or Lenovo are the way to go?

I've just about settled on a Thinkpad Edge. Spec'd up with an i5, ATI GPU, 4Gb Ram and 6 cell battery works out at around £550 (plus Quidco discount).

I don't want to spend any more than that, but want opinions on whether that will fit my requirements (and last a good few years) or whether I can do better for the money?

Thanks

For £550, getting a i5 and dedicated graphics is a tough ask. So I'd say it's a good deal. You could get an open box / dented Dell Inspiron for that price, to put this into perspective.

That's what I'm thinking. It seems like a good deal and Lenovo generally are well thought of. What's the build quality like on the 15.6" Edge though? I've read mixed reviews about it. Some reviews say the 15.6" version is less sturdy than the smaller 13" and 14" models. I know it won't be as good as the T series but is it still a cut above the run of the mill offerings from Sony, Dell, Toshiba etc?

Sony's are OK. The latest Dell XPS look good quality too. I've seen some Lenovo entertainment laptops in a shop, they weren't that much better than the rest. Creaky plastics and all. If you can, go and see for yourself, I'd say. They may not have 'edge' laptops though.

Then again, at this price point, you won't get anything with really amazing build quality. I'd say it will still be in the upper tier, so it would still be a good buy.
