Indeed NV have been using the same tech for a long time.
when the 8800 GTX & vista came out there was lots of people problems for many for a good 6 months with the combination of new tech & new OS.
Its ATIs turn this time round, Oh & im not having any problems with my ATI 3870 which should not be surprising seeing how long the tech has been around.
I remember that as i bought 8800 gtx on release. And the only reason after waiting 6 months they decided to fix it was because on the day that the x2900 was released they released a driver which for the most sorted most of the issues.
I don't remember having any real issues with the 4870 there was a minor thing with the fan but editing the profile soon fixed this and there was the grid menu where it went into slideshow mode. Never experienced any sort of driver issue with the 4890s'.
But the vertical line crash which often gets posted about always seem share certain things in common. High overclocked pc's, win 7 and 5 series cards.
I use to get it to start off with. It either happened if I overclocked the card beyond what it was capable off. Or if I was overclocking my setup and it wasn't stable. I thought it was stable but obviously the cards didn't like it and told me so promptly!
Since spending time refining my settings I haven't seen the black vertical line crash for quite a while. This of course helped me but I doubt it would help everybody.
I do also wish nvidia come out with something but not because of drivers issues that so many people seem to be experiencing but because that makes ATI to improve their product which will in turn hopefully make nvidia do the same. Which means better for the end user.
People are quick to jump on the I am going back to nvidia bandwagon citing ati drivers as the cause. Fine your point is valid and I do agree on so many of these peoples complaints. But then I also experienced the 6 months of the 8800gtx release till the driver release when the x2900 came out the drivers weren't exactly rock solid. And don't even get me started on the 280 gtx release upclocking/ downclock issues and 2d screen flickering when you dragged any kind of overlay fast over the screen. And they still hadn't fixed the upclocking/downclocking for dual screen users when I went to the 285.
The true reality is they are both as bad and both as good as each other. If someone says one is better than the other fine I respect their experience on that matter even though my experince might not mirror theirs.
