Man I've been having problems!

Last week I upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks without any issues, a day or so later I started getting random crashes and from then the random became more continuous than random.

So.. it go to the point where my Mini, a mid 2012 model with upgraded SSD and 16GB of Ram, would get to a boot screen which was white with an apple logo in the center and a progress bar.. the bar would get about half way then the machine just shut down.

So.. off I go to friends to create a Yosemite USB installer drive.. create it and try to install with no success.

So.. I run the disk utility application, format the drive, run verify which comes back clean but I still repair it to make sure, another verification and it comes back clean.

So.. try another install.. crashes during install, sometimes giving errors and sometimes just restarting.

My question now is.. since I clearly cannot install Yosemite.. I want to install Mavericks again as this OS was fully stable and I had no issues with it.

But.. I don't want to bother my friend all the time and since I have no access to any other macs I'm unsure of how to download or create an installer drive.

Can it be done on a windows machine?

Where would I get the installer package from?

This Mini was working absolutely fine and has been for the 2 years I've had it, I got the SSD and memory installed by an apple verified installation company.. so I can't see issues with the installation procedures.. plus they were installed well over a year and a half ago!

I was going to post this in the official Yosemite thread but thought it might get swallowed up with all the other issues people are having..

Any help????

Interesting, I remember it told me TRIM enabler was not supported by Yosemite but figure that since TRIM was already enabled it would not be an issue.

I wonder why Apple don't like people enabling TRIM on 3rd party installed SSDs.. other than to force people to pay their crazy prices for their SSDs.

So.. after getting back in have you managed to enable TRIM again?

Still isn't working.

I'm now actually getting an error though.. Not that it makes sense:

File System verify or repair failed.
Quit installer to restart your computer or try again.

The reason I say it makes no sense is as I have verified the disk prior to installing without any issues.

Time to go back to Mavericks I think.

Are you 100% sure that your SSD isn't failing? You don't appear to have ruled that out as a cause of your issues.

Managed to get Mountain Lion back on the Mini..

I had to use the following keys on startup to get into internet recovery:

Alt+CMD+R

Keep these pressed down when you start your machine and it will start interent recovery.

Now to see if I can get Yosemite on.. if not its gonna be Mavericks...

Right, but by ruled out I meant have you popped a known-good drive in and tried installing Yosemite? It's either that or RAM if you're getting those errors. What does the Apple Hardware Test say?

I didn't pop in a known good drive or remove memory chips, the results of the test stated in green that the drive appeared to have no issues.

I've now updated to Mavericks from Mountain Lion.. and this is where I am staying.. until they release a stable version of Yosemite.

Whilst that may sound a little like a dig, I have had nothing but issues with Yosemite.

Well.. it's now looking like you might be right!

I was getting errors last night.. but this morning it seems ok.

Gonna grab some diagnostic tools and then see what happens, luckily my SSD is within the 3 year warranty!

Ok.. I might need to change the thread title lol

After a lot of tinkering I have found that I have a faulty memory module....

Installed my original 4GB kit and its now running Yosemite.

Just goes to show.. sometimes you need to step back and remove stuff before jumping to conclusions!

I've seen plenty of cases where memory 'works' fine during normally use on an installed system but when it comes to an upgrade or reinstall it flakes out.

Crucial memory by any chance?

Nah not at all. It's just I've personally had 2 modules, from separate pairs over the last few years fail on me.

Fortunately both within their warranty so they were replaced.
