...you find out you are going to spend the next academic year running a project on one of the few CUDA clusters in the world, and all you can think is 'how much ppd could i generate?'

don't you get allocated computing time? I saw a form once to justify the computing time you needed and guesstimation on how long it would take, etc..... groaned and went, I'd do it on my home "cluster".... would be faster!
"cluster" in inverted because really, they were parallel jobs on separate machines.....
