Guys,

Any hints or tips on getting a young driver insured?

My brother passed in November and wants to get driving but is getting some ridiculous quotes.

He has a Fiat Punto 1.1 that he is possibly going to use but is open to change.

I have checked the usual websites, and even a couple of the supposed young people experts but they are coming out at 6k!!!

I have even tried having my mum as the main driver and him named (my mum has agreed to use his car to get to work daily and he can have it at weekends) but this is a similar sort of costs.

Any suggestions, or is it a case of 17 year olds just have to wait a couple of years before being scammed by insurance firms?

Have him as a named driver but if he is actually the main driver not your mum then he is screwed.
The only real way a 17 year old male can drive is as a named driver.

Try Admiral/Bell/Elephant or NFU. I have had the best quotes from then as a young driver.
Also, kick him in the nuts if he is says he wants to modify it and not tell the insurance company.

Im insured with elephant, I only took out my own policy in august after being a named driver since 17
Im 20 now
Focus TDCI 1.6 55 plate
0 NCB
3 points and 1 accident (knock for knock)
£1100 for the 10 months (gone 10 month policy to boost my NCB quicker)

He doesn't want to modify - he is only interested in a car to get places and will have to satisfy himself with a car at the weekends if he does have to go the named driver route.

Is it best doing quotes individually through the admiral/bell area, or to use the big moneysupermarket/confused sites?

Nice equality and fairness going on really isn't there, only rich kids can drive now thanks to car insurance!

.... and surely ridiculous pricing is only forcing people to be underhand when it comes to providing details?

Try confused.com with parents as named drivers - I insured my mondeo TPFT as a student for £2400 at the age of 18 which was cheap compared to what other insurers offered me

Go on comparison websites. Then find the cheapest 2-3 and quit the comparison site and do a new quote on each provider seperately. In my experience going through the comparison sites adds £40-50.

I was down as a named driver for a few years (I am not going to go into who drove it the most) and so where all my friends.
With minimum wage being so poor for under 18s there is no way a full time worker can pay £2,000 a year insurance!

This is fronting and is illegal.

TBH its the only way of doing it at that age.
Im 23 and have 4 years ncb. My renewal price im looking at is £1600 on a Fiesta ST. Complete joke considering im paying £1100 at the moment.

When I passed at 18 it was about £3000 on a 1.1 106. I put my dad as the main driver on my Clio and it was like £700. He was the main driver though as I didnt really use it. Just a few times during the week and mainly on weekends to go to places.

I did a quote a few months ago on a 2006 ST Fiesta, inc. business use, 1 year ncb and with both parents was £1050 with £0 voluntary excess.
You either live in a terrible postcode or you are doing something wrong :p.

EDIT: Just loaded it up and with 4 year NCB like you (I am 22 so you are older) it makes it £940. Have you got some points or something?

£650 tpft in my own name at 17 says otherwise
£650 fully comp with a fault claim and no NCB at 18 says otherwise at
£524 fully comp with a years NCB and that fault claim at 19 says otherwise.

Your experience is not really indicitive of the current market!

When I started driving 8 years ago I paid around 1k for a 1.1 fiesta, this doesn't seem to be the case any more.

My brother has a part time job whilst at college, anything above 2k puts him out of the running really.

May be I should ask my Grandma what she paid when she was 17 then post:
'I knowz best 'cos I paid £36 for my first year of insurance'.

Don't post crap, I do not know how old you are but if you are telling the truth then you clearly weren't a teenager in the last 10 years.

Which is why I said he is screwed if he is driving it the most. There is no realistic a way a 17 year old male can drive without being a second driver, unless mummy and daddy pay for it or he is selling drugs. Just don't get caught being the main driver.

TBH its the only way of doing it at that age.

I managed to pay it myself ... without selling drugs. £1580, and that was just over a year ago.

I think you'll find your wrong, but Hxc hasn't mentioned the type of insurance he took out ;)

No, IIRC he took out classic insurance on a Mini. Nothing wrong with that.

Besides, I've proved its possible to afford cover as a main driver at 17 anyway.

He has, but he didn't say anywhere that it was classical insurance and gives no help to the OP on insuring a Punto.

Just drive uninsured the fine in comparison is next to nothing.

Unfortunately, you are correct. Stupid isn't it!
