Young players that really need a transfer this season to help their development?

  • Which players need to seek a transfer urgently because their development is being stifled?
  • Where should they transfer to in order to get the best chance of maximum playing time and useful coaching that will improve them?
I'm mainly bothered about English players (because the Euros are on) but please post about any really promising talents that you now about that you think are unlikely to live up to their promise at current clubs.

Daniel Sturridge
possibly the most obvious one? now 22 it's starting to look more imperative that he gets over the ego and desire to earn the most money, look for a permanent transfer to a lower down the table club where he could actually play most games while fit, and ideally have a manager who is good at getting the most from players. Everton? Wigan? somewhere in La Liga or the Bundesliga?

Josh McEachran
probably young enough at 19 that he could take a chance on another loan somewhere, but the loans system seems such a **** way of developing players - the loan clubs aren't really that interested in player development, they just get a bit of cheap cover for their main squad. McEachran isn't getting much of a chance at Chelsea, the talk is he is the long term future and a replacement for Lampard, but how can that happen whilst watching from the stands or on sitting on the bench at Swansea?

Adam Johnson
Would he have made the England squad if he was playing more? According to the stats he actually did make 38 appearances and 7 goals.

Sturridge played quite a bit last season didn't he?
At first, but not much after AVB was sacked. Given the players already at Chelsea and the ones potentially signing, Sturridge is clearly not going to be the primary striker. As an England fan I'd be happy for Sturridge to go elsewhere and have a real attempt at becoming one of the best/the best English forward as he reaches his prime. If he's ultimately not good enough then so be it, but at least give it the best possible effort.

It's harsh, but I believe the loan system is broken - it's encouraging wealthy big clubs to sign as many promising talents in the hope that they might turn out OK, they then send them out on loan in the hope that they might get game time only to find out the loan club has other priorities, the developing player isn't quite good enough and ends up sidelined.

You point out some success for loanees at your club, perhaps this issue is worse for potentially elite players? I believe McEachran has (at least partially) wasted a season, and it bothers me enormously that he could follow the pattern of Gael Kakuta, who has had one disappointing season on loan after another. Some might say, "oh but Sturridge had a great loan at Bolton, loans work." I just see it as evidence that he would be better served full time at a club that's the right level for his current ability.

...the EPPP...
I've only given this a very cursory look so far, it looks to have some interesting ideas but it's really about the academy system, and the principles agreed only take effect from the coming season.

Jermaine Defoe, David Beckham, Frank Lampard
All with one loan season away from the parent club. It may have been OK in the past, but there has been a shift in how loans are being used and that's at the heart of my objection. Perhaps it's because Chelsea are leading the way in this corruption of the system that I've noticed it, and the recent rule change to allow loans between Premier League clubs has made it easier to abuse loans.

Kakuta, Bruma and I think others are going into their fourth season on loan. Does anyone else feel the same way as I do? that this is fundamentally wrong and not how loans were ever intended to be used, nor is it the best interest of players and their best chance of improvement.

Partly I do blame the young players and their parents/agents for being drawn by big money and prioritising that above long term development - though I wouldn't like rules trying to limit salaries at any age, I feel quite strongly that anyone should be able to earn whatever the employer is willing to pay.

don't play the loan player we have to pay his wages... meaning that we have to have the players best interests at heart
How long has this been the case?
