Oh, I like these kinds of thoughts. I still remember the first series of Red Dwarf when Holly asked Lister to erase Agatha Christie from his memory so he could read her books again...
HOLLY: Would you mind erasing some of my memory banks?
LISTER: What for?
HOLLY: Well, if you erase all the Agatha Christie novels from my memory bank, I can read 'em again tonight.
LISTER: How do I do it?
HOLLY: Just type, "HolMem. Password override. The novels Christie, Agatha." Then press erase.
LISTER: I've done it.
HOLLY: Done what?
LISTER: Erased Agatha Christie.
HOLLY: Who's she, then?
LISTER: Holly, you just asked me to erase all Agatha Christie novels from your memory.
HOLLY: Why should I do that? I've never heard of her.
LISTER: You've never heard of her because I've just erased her from your smegging memory.
HOLLY: What'd you do that for?
LISTER: You asked me to!
HOLLY: When?
LISTER: Just now!
HOLLY: I don't remember this.
As we can see, it can raise some problems. So, if we erase
all of our memories, would we even remember what computers are? Let alone games?
So perhaps this is about erasing the memory of
specific games so we can enjoy them again. But then what about the graphics and other time-sensitive expectations?
I mean, Deus Ex would look awful! And things like the tram ride at the start of Half Life amazed me first time around, but wouldn't make me bat an eyelid if I could remember all the other game intros since...
Okay, okay. I'll just go along with the spirit of this...
1. Deus Ex - just blew my mind in terms of how immersive a game could be
2. System Shock 2 - close second in mind-blowing
3. Half-Life - this one may depend on having memory erased of the sequels and other games since, but it was still ace.
4. Morrowind - best RPG ever imho
5. Baldurs Gate II
6. Planescape: Torment
7. Portal 1 & 2 - sneaking two in here. They're both quite short, but so wonderful to play through the first time.
8. Call of Duty 1 - mostly for the Stalingrad level, which still kind of haunts me to this day
9. Resident Evil 1 - the sequels never matched the feeling I got first time out
10. WoW - for basically the same reasons as Omaeka. I honestly wouldn't have put this on the list but for reading his post, but actually it sums up how I feel about this game if I'm honest...
