Your current GPU buying strategy

I went from a MSI ATI Radeon HD 5850 Twin FrozR (£122 new and it was pretty hot then) to 2700 Super then snagged a 3080 fe. No plans to change anytime soon but will be interested when the more normal next gen ones arrive other than the £2k monsters.

Sticking to my 3080 which I got for under £800 new, 4080/90 prices are an absolute joke. May consider the red team in a few years but with DLSS the 3080 is perfectly fine for 4K and will keep me going for sometime to come I'm sure.

I'm not too keen on giving my money to nVidia anymore.

Looking at all the performance graphs with RT on and 4k. Looks like double to me on all but FC6 That's the resolution I use and I want RT on, why wouldn't you when they've also enhanced RT performance?

Where you get 77% from anyway? 1080 & 1440p resolutions are all CPU bound anyway so not allowing full performance of the 4090 and would skew the result down as the 4090 wont be fully utilized - so was that an overall game average across all resolutions? Post link. Even then 77% not too special!?

What card you got? 970? Bet you thought that had 4GB of RAM when you bought it.

I agree with the silly money part. You pays your money you makes your choice. 'tis only money - can't take it with you.
Imagine playing at 4K so silly. 1440P smarter race.

What does that have to do with this discussion? Or was that just a pathetic attempt to have a dig at me for running an old card?
Was just pulling your leg coz they only had 3.5GB, and I thought 4090 was 100%. Poor joke - apologies

Prefer Guru3D's relative performance chart though.

You keep imagining mate

That's right - that game that came out unfinished. Some games just make systems chug, by design or poor design.

Same review 1440p is only 37fps. So 1440p not knocking it out of the park either.

Those are review settings to compare cards - they aren't settings you'd use.

Ah, settings - those things we aren't meant to use anymore to get the best IQ vs fps for your hardware. Ultra preset only. You cant turn a setting down - frowned upon. :D

My strategy you ask OP? Well I'm glad you asked.... I've been planning this for a while as it happens and it's about time I talked it through. What I'll do is basically moan about prices for about another 1-2 years - mainly on OCUK forums - and then bend over and let Nvidia finally have a good go on me. Then when I lose my house in a few years due to the collapse of the economy/jobs/housing market, I'll still have my 5090 for widespread recognition from OCUK and agreement that I made the right call, putting that before my family as priority.

Or I could carry on with my 3060 for a while.

1440P still cheaper.
Not hating I just don't understand people who make the decision then moan it's too expensive.

I've got a PC with a 3090 that's mostly used for rendering. If I can drop on another one for £600 I'll run two with NVlink and pool the vram.

I've got a small pc in the living room with a 2080ti connected to an oled that I do 1440 gaming on and also a bit of VR. If I can get something the same size, max 300w and twice the raster performance for £800 I'll upgrade that.

I'm in no rush to do either, in less of a rush to give Nvidia any more money. Last radeon card was a 45

Bloody cat!

4570, wouldn't mind trying a new one.

So according to techpower up the 4090 is 77% faster than a 3080. a little short of your 2x estimate.
Also the performance increase is pretty normal. The 3090 is 85% faster than a 2080, or 57% faster than a 2080ti.

People have whipped themselves into a frenzy thinking this is an unprecedented level of performance increase when it is nothing too special

x2 :D
