Ok, so I thought this could be an interesting thread.
So, let us say you have a particularly good salary (high five figures a year), but are spending your own money. So you have to be conscientious of what you're spending.
How many computers do you reckon you'd have in your household?
Personally I'm thinking:
'Main' Pc - General browsing - fairly low power consumption, ideal for kids to do the basics, and have a bit of fun on. On a reasonable amount of the time.
iMac or Macmini equivalent with Boot Camp for Windows/kids games.
£1400 - Base Spec 27" iMac
Server - Large PC server, probably looking at a RAID 5 array, however low power usage and somewhere out of the way. On 24/7 and can run as a download box as well.
