I know most will reply with pre 2000 movies but I'd be really keen to see what people think are good 2000+ horror movies.

Suspiria is VERY high up there for me. It's style, it's score and it's direction are as perfect as you're likely to see within the genre.

(I know you said post 000's, but just for anyone who might be interested in general...)

Rosemarys Baby
The Thing
Evil Dead
The Shining
Raw
Alien
Re-Animator (those it's more a comedy at this point)
The Babadook
The Vanishing
Mullholland Drive
Eraserhead
Ring (both versions are good in there own ways)
The Devils Backbone
Possession
Jacobs Ladder
Meshes In The Afternoon scares the sense out of me every time
Let The Right One In
Anything by Cronenberg gives me the damn willies

There's probably a thousand more that I'm missing here. Horror is such hugely varied and rich genre, despite what people think these days.

A few already mentioned but mine would be:

The Shining
Alien
Jacobs Ladder
Event Horizon
Ring
Amityville Horror
Damien
The Thing

But a modern one, albeit it more zombie related, would be Train to Busan.

The Shining
Hellraiser
Event Horizon
The Ring
The Thing
Let the Right one in/Let me in (both good)
28 days later
13 Ghosts
It
Cube
An American Werewolf in London
Shaun of the Dead
The Cabin in the Woods

In no particular order and covering all subgenres, my favourites:

The Thing (80’s)
Hereditary - I thought this recent film was REALLY good but I seem to be the only one on here that liked it  :( :p
The Grudge
The Cabin in the Woods
Return of the Living Dead (THE zombie movie, IMO - so fun!)
Saw
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the oldie that by far away stands up the best)
The Woman in Black - yes, the Harry Potter one.

Slick recent Hollywood efforts worth a watch:

Insidious
Conjuring 1 / 2
Annabelle Creation (the second film)

Classic genre setters that are great films in their own way but not my favourites:

Alien
The Shining
The Exorcist

Audition is the only movie where I had to pause it and take a 20min break.
The Ring (remake) is the only movie where it lingers after I come home from the cinema seeing it, and then not turn on my TV for 2 days.

Everything else I think its a bit meh in terms of the fear factor. I can appreciate them on a movie critique level and can appreciate the tension, such as those in A Quiet Place but I don't find most horror movies scary.

p.s. I found Train to Busan more like an action adventure with zombies.

Frailty
Session 9
The Neon Demon
The Machinist
Inside (French film)
Frontier(s) (French film)
Drag Me To Hell
The Mist
Slither (same director as Guardians Of The Galaxy!)
The Orphanage (Spanish film)
Bone Tomahawk
What We Do In The Shadows

Sinister

and not horror as such but a challenging watch nonetheless for two fairly graphic scenes : Irreversible.

EDIT: for tension ratcheting Vacancy is a favorite.

Another vote for sinister. From the opening scene involving the tree i actually found the entire film quite uncomfortable to watch due to the level of tension.

Train to busan is also excellent.

Be sure to check out some of the French movies:

Martyrs - an absolute favourite and very harrowing towards the latter part, don't even consider the remake, i'll hunt you down :D
Switchblade Romance, also known as High Tension
Frontiers
Inside - again, please please don't entertain the idea of watching the remake.
