So then, what do all you guys use your file servers for?

Just intrested/nosey and a little bored.

I have a pc sitting about XP2800+ just wondering if I could put it to use...

I have a Dell Poweredge 1500SC sitting around. I should put it so some use. Its quite a capable server really. 4x15K SCSI drives in RAID 0 and can hold 2 CPUs. I could just run folding@home on it 24/7 :P

I just have an old box (800mhz duron & 384mb ram) ... got 2 x 80gb hdds, and just use it to store all files centrally (have 5 family PC's, saves having mahoosive hdds in all of em) .. all downloading is done through it.

Runs a 24/7 ts & vent server as well.

Probably going to set it up to collect & store email as well when I can be bothered.... would be interestin to know what other things people have running :)

Got a old 766MHz Celeron under the stairs, with 2 x 40GiB HDD's.

Using it for F@H and Filesharing between, Laptop and Desktop.

Also hosting my website.

Does the job. What more could you ask for?

ive got two, one 3500+ oc'd to 2500 / 512mb ddr with 2 x 80 gig maxtor ide drives running windows xp and a dual pentium 3 866 / 512mb rambus with a 18.2gb scsi and 2 x 60 gig seagate barracuda iv hdd's running windows 2003 server datacentre. The dual p3 was originally just my domain controller & webserver but I added the two ide drives as I ran out of space on my main file server.

Saying that, i've just turned it on for the first time in a month and it's flying up errors on POST and the PC speaker is bleeping like mad. Well fixing that should keep me entertained at the weekend . Maybe i'll put it back to RAID 5.

EDIT: It's complaining about a failed logical drive. Damn you :D

I always use the file server excuse to add another cruncher to my rosetta farm with the intention of adding a scsi array but the money always goes towards upgrading the cpu :p. Currently My old AXP is my only reliable rig so I backup any important stuff onto it's massive 40gb IDE 5400rpm drive. :D

I have two - a dual Athlon MP 2000+ system with 2GB of RAM and a couple of 120GB drives giving it 240GB of space - nothing special and due to the fact it's noisy and power hungry I don't bother using it. I would sell it but it's probably worth peanuts so I can't be bothered with the hassle.

My main file server is a P4 2.4 with 1GB RAM and various hard drives giving it around 1TB of space. I just have it running Windows XP - don't need anything flashy on it as it doesn't do much else. I prefer to use XP over Linux largely because of NTFS support with no messing around - I have needed to take the drives out and put them in an enclosure either for lending to friends or because I've needed to take the stuff somewhere and I simply couldn't be bothered to transport the entire box. The only reason it's even as 'good' a PC as it is is because it was spare parts left over from upgrading my girlfriend's PC. Otherwise I would probably have just used a 2GHz Celeron box with 256MB RAM (it's literally running Windows, nothing more, not a single application) for it.

I basically use it for backup purposes. It has a complete backup of my MP3 archive and whatever else I deem important enough to warrant 2 or 3 copies of.
