Your first year driving

I'm halfway through my first year as a motorist by this point. However, I still have that feeling/thought in the back of my head that this could be the day when one mistake leads to a crash or even just scratching someone's motor in the carpark. It's been with me since the first day out on my own and can drain any enjoyment out of driving. It's largely down to fear that any little knock will cause my already high insurance to rocket.

My question to you is, did any of you feel like this in your early years of driving?

Nope. Although after 6 months I binned my first car. Got my second a week later and still didn't think about crashing, and I drove both cars...quickly. :p

I'm bit worried how I will be when the day comes I drive on my own for the first time, without the safety of the instructor!... especially thinking about how I would be on a trip up home from uni (100 or so miles)

I should be all done end of march time ready to take my test !

I drive quickly too... sometimes too quickly. (Have removed my R plates so I'm not done for doing over 45 :p) It's just that I know if I end up having to claim, it's likely that it'll be a while before I can afford to get back in a car. Just trying to get this year at least over as soon as possible and hope the premium drops a lot :p

No, I behaved as if I was absolutely bulletproof, drove my Mk3 Escort into a large pond, thought it was hilarious, got towed out and refused to wash it for weeks afterwards, did rolling burnouts everywhere, handbrake turns and J flicks at every opportunity, oh and my mate lived down a private unlit gravel road and we all used to drive down it at night with no lights on and handbrake turn outside his parent's cottage which was on a riverbank.

I haven't really changed much in 12 years :/

I only crashed the first car, the 2nd survived my ownership relatively unscathed (replacement engine doesn't count. :p). I didn't claim when I crashed, car wasn't worth it, especially with my excess taken into account.

It's odd but great. The day I passed I nearly put my dad's Rover sideways. :p :D

Like Lopez I started off feeling like I was invincible.

I spun my car on a damp road within 2 months of passing and straight after I was taking the same corner at nearly the same speed just to prove to myself that it could be done.

Thankfully I never had an at fault shunt!

I binned my first car after 6 months as I didn't leave enough space between me and a car in front on a greasy road surface, plus was on the way home after some stuff occuring at a friends house, was on a bit of a high. :o

Dumb big smash of money, taught me to keep my distance, but didn't give me a constant fear.

I do fairly big milages in comparison with my friends due to a 40mile round trip a day compared to their like, 5miles to sixth form, and the degree to which I relax in a car is really shown. They are all tort and both hands top of the wheel whereas I will relax and rest hands on the bottom on my lap..

Can't believe that I can get quotes of under £800 fully comp at 18 with no NCB and a fault accident either though, not even tried the classic insurers who were half the price of mainstream ones at 17. :D

My 1st year was relatively uneventful, I made a few silly mistakes which didn't lead to a crash. Now after more than 5 years of driving I still haven't hit anything.

I never had the fear that a crash was due, this is because I know that I'm the best driver in the history of man. ;)

Yeah, I rarely have two hands on the wheel. Doesn't feel comfortable. Prefer to have one hand resting on the gearknob. Which sounds a little wrong...
