There was an interesting article about memory on the radio this morning in which they briefly discussed mnemonics.

Although I must have heard many over the years the only 2 that have really stuck are:

The Knuckle mnemonic for the number of days in each month where each knuckle represents a 31-day month.

and colours of the rainbow mnemonic "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain"

The knuckle one is actually relatively useful and find myself using it fairly often, the colours not so much!

So do you have any that you use?

Yeah the knuckle one is great. They should teach it in schools - I only heard it when I was about 18 and it helped no end until I actually then remembered them properly.

I also still use Never Eat Shredded Wheat for compass points.

I work with someone who has to hold her hands out to see the "L" to tell between left and right.

There was the one at school for points on a compass, Never East Shredded Wheat which my kids now use.

And the one for wiring a plug, Blue (left) and Brown (right).

Never worked for me that one, as you still have to remember the four months at the start.

That was discussed on an episode of QI. It turns out that there are more instances of 'e' before 'i' than 'i' before 'e'. I remember Lee Mack having a nightmare with the word 'ceiling' causing Stephen Fry to lose the plot.
