I haven't seen any issues with my Atom based server, I seem to be more limited by the physical speed of the green drives. No problems streaming high-def content, copying files etc. Don't expect it to be particularly fast in doing complex tasks such as encoding though.

thats good think Ill pop over to that on my next upgrade !!!

Yup, they are IcyDock ones. Difficult to get now, OcUK dont sell them no more . . . .

They are 2 5in3 bays and 1 3 in 2. All that runs off a single Antec Earthwatts 380W PSU. And my UPS (Newly bought, the cheapy from OcUK) says its only using 132W.

just seen the price of those cage's.....OMG

Just as fair warning, the problem with Atom is that Intel has tried its hardest to lock down what chipsets and configurations the boards have, so don't expect to find an Atom coupled with 6 PCI Express slots and 10 SATA ports!

I went for the Point of View Atom 330 board in the end, its expensive and a little overkill in the graphics department, but it does have four SATA ports and a PCI Express port for expansion. There are Atom server boards out there, but they are for non-enthusiast uses such as industry or retail, so good luck finding one :D

that would hinder adding a big ass raid controller too it..... its not for at least a year so im fine until then hopefully somthing will come out ... maybe ion will go mainstream ?

Some great pics here guys.

I notice the use of patch panels in one or two of the photos. I'm using a couple of 24 port switches in my setup and could never quite see the point of using a patch panel (or two). So, the cables for my house network are all terminated with RJ45s and plugged straight into the network switches.

What am I missing? Are patch panels really required in a home network setup?

its all about showing your kit of to the homies ya nar ?

lol no in all serious its not necessary although given the chance Id defiantly do it as it would be a lot easier if you wanted to have multiple networks etc plug other stuff directly into them etc etc etc ....

Maybe of interest to some - you can currently grab a HP proliant microserver for £200 or so, HP are offering £100 cashback on top of that until the end of december. So £100 for a dual core Athlon 1.3, 1GB RAM and 4 drive bays, it's about the best value disk free NAS I've seen for a long time...

I saw that deal but didnt know if you could install an os on ?
