I'm a little bored tonight and decided to investigate how long my hosts server had been online with the following results.

Who's got the longest uptime? :D

hostgator
Time since last reboot: 127 days, 18 hours, 36 minutes
Average Load: 3.89,3.06,2.75
Uptime: 127 days, 18:36

Jon, bear in mind that the former is hosted on a load balanced cluster and therefore servers can be added, removed and rebooted at will with no downtime to your website :).

Time since last reboot: 250 days, 15 hours, 46 minutes
Average Load: 3.58,3.47,3.42
Uptime: 250 days, 15:46

But i'm with vidahost, they don't even understand the concept of 'downtime' :p

Hey,

I'm aware of that Adam. I keep refreshing it and see different times. :p.

Compared to most (with the exception of my first website as per Adam above) the uptime is pretty poor.

I tried a website with another hosting company here and the script didn't work which is a shame :(.

Jon

Don't forget, even on an individual server an extremely long uptime isn't always a good thing - it might mean the host is running a kernel with unpatched vulnerabilities.

Just tried several sites I have on the clustered hosting with tsohost, all had an uptime of 20 ish hours.....don't know if this is good or bad?

It'll be the uptime of the web server the load balancer has chosen to serve your request... refresh and you'll get a different time each refresh. :o
If the times are largely the same, it'll probably be because the web servers were rebooted in a staggered fashion...

Prompted by another thread I'd like to clarify (as Adam has already mentioned) that uptime isn't the be all and end all and is not necessarily a good thing. As per the other thread:

One of the testaments to my uptime thread is the fact that TSO have a rather nice setup in which allows for servers to be rebooted and maintained etc etc without downtime as no single website is reliant on one piece of hardware.

Although my website with TSOHost will have a server uptime less than that of other hosts the overall uptime will be the same if not greater than most.
Just in case people were associating TSO with poor uptime. :). Hope this clears things up.

I still find it interesting how long a server has been up. For me personally i could never have a vps server up for more than 60 days without getting boring and breaking it. :D.

I don't get it either. Secuity patches need to be installed every now and then. A quick restart at 2am doesnt hurt anyone. Unless you a multinational organisation, in which case redunant hosting should be in place. However, for 99.99999% of people how long a server has been on is irrelevant.

Fast access and quality support are far more important imo.

That's only if you're using their cluster.
