Just thought I'd start a thread about ITX builds, I've seen a few interesting ones knocking about would be good to have a spec list and a picture.

I've only got one iTX its my firewall

LEX NEO CV700A chassis with 3NICs
CPU: VIA C7 nano BGA2 1GHz
1GB RAM
60GB 2.5" SATA

InWin BM639
Intel D945GCLF2 Atom 330
2GB ram
320GB 2.5" hdd
Ubuntu Server 9.1 with Webmin

Uses:
Proxy server
Usenet client
Rapidshare premium downloader

Basically a download box and proxy.

@ Biffa - Are those extra NICs gigabit?

Intel D945GCLF2
2GB RAM
250GB WD Scorpio WD2500BEVS - OS/WSUS/WDS
2 x 1TB Samsung & 1 x 1TB Seagate - Backup/iSCSI
Morex Venus 669

It is currently my domain controller, it does patch management via WSUS and image deployment via WDS. Also used as a NAS for audio/video. I've stopped using it for iSCSI as it's not really up to the task, especially with only one NIC.

perfect thread, glad i came across this.
need some advice as i plan on splashing the cash on one of these builds today for a torrent box/media/file server.
im torn between two boards, the gigabyte atom 330 or the asus 330. the asus is far more feature rich but is double the price of the gigabyte board, on paper the asus wins hands down but really for double the price? 2 extra sata ports if you include the eSata compared to the gigabyte 2+ide, gigabit lan vs 10/100, dx10 gpu and hdmi vs intel interdrated.
im torn what would be best for the duties i want, ive never used a server before so im not sure what is a must for it.
secondly id love to know what software to run on this, id prefer to stay in a windows enviromant as that is what i am most familier with and im unsure if a software like freeNas would fit the bill as i want the machine to be a little more than just nas duties.

any help greatly appreaciated.

ION is needed only if you want to have an accelerated graphics, mainly for video. If it is just the server, then all you need is to have Atom 330 (=dual core).

is gigabit ethernet a must, i only ask as the rest of my network is gigabit but ive never ran media through it so have never noticed performance differances to 10/100

Top transfer speeds you would get on 10/100 is around 9-12MB/s

On gigabit you are generally limited by the hard drive speed (Unless its RAID or SSD) Very useful for transferring large files etc.

how about general nas duties, media streaming hd content etc?

I can't comment on streaming HD content. But music playback alone uses next to none on transfer speed so 10/100 is more than enough.
I just copied a 1.09GB folder of 8 minute tracks of music from my ITX to my desktop at around 30-50MB/s. Not achievable at that speed on a 10/100 network (I would expect about 5-9MB/s)

Edit:
I just tried streaming a full HD video, it uses about 1MB/s so 10/100 should be fine to stream content. But actual file transfers will take more time.

To put it another way, a 1GB file will take approx 1 minute 20 seconds to transfer of 10/100. On Gigabit it will take approx 15 seconds.
