Following on from the "when can we expect the next generation of consoles" thread.

I thought it would be a good idea for us to post what we want our next gen consoles to offer us :)

What I would like in a Next Gen console?

A decent amount of ram, 1GB would do nicely.
If Hard Drives are the future of consoles, at least use 7200rpm models... or better yet, lets move to Solid State Drives.
Both of these should speed loading times, which are still lagging behind PC's.
Gigabit LAN and Wireless N capabilities.
Generally they should be smaller than current Gen - the Wii may be too small for some of the features they'd pack... but personally the 360 and the PS3 are on the large side.
Silence.... I can't emphasize that enough. Good quality, quite/silent fans that push a lot of CFM don't exactly cost an arm and a leg. And put in a quiet optical drive for goodness sake.
Slot-Loading Drives... they're wonderful inventions, and it's annoying they're not easy to get hold of for PC's
A stable frame-rate and at the minimum games should be putting out 720p
A way of not having to put of with the 10 year old kids that think they're awesome at a game, you beat them and then put up with abuse for it.... heck I'd like a way of not having to play them at all personally.
Backwards compatibillity with this generation of consoles as standard, regardless of what version of a console you buy or whether your in Europe or the US.

Finally... a sensible price for the console and all peripherals.
Now I don't mind paying extra for something if it's worth it, but I don't expect to pay close to £100 more just for a larger HDD... when if I bought a regular HDD from an etailer like OcUK it would cost me £25.
£30-£40 for controllers is also ridiculous.

Feel free to add post yours, or shoot mine down :p

gotta agree with you on most of what you've put, though I could quite easily go without slot loading drives. for me it's just something else that could potentially break. I'd be happy with a standard optical drive just as long as its quiet :)

My main ones on top of the best features from the current generation:

- silent with low heat & low power consumption (the last 2 possibly after a few revisions)
- decent sized hard drive as standard with solid state as an option (until the technology matures & prices decrease)
- backwards compatibility as a minimum for all psn / xbla / wiiware titles purchased in the previous generation

Playstation specific:

- PSN games released in the US, Japan etc also available in Europe on the same day (no region specific boundaries and no several month waiting periods between region releases :()

:)

AA at 1080p res. Native high res textues, not 480p upscaled to 1080p. Built-in watercooling, quiet cooling system. Install entire game to HD, no need for the disc. Use PC USB peripherals ie Logitech G25 and X-52 Pro, with profiles for each, and each game, and is updated.

Sort of going off that, but talking about the entire market in general...

Global release dates that are either a) the same day or b) the same week.

I understand developing things for different consoles can be hard, so with a pinch of salt I'll add...

Cross console releases on the same day or same week.

I think it might have been Nokkon (can't remember) that said in a Rock Band thread... that this country actually runs the risk of Rock Band 2 being released for before Rock Band 1 has come out on the Playstation 3.

That's just ****ing stupid :(

Graphics
1080p
8x AA
30FPS+

Hardware
Huge hard-drive for full game installs (still requires the disk to play)

Peripherals
No motion sensing
360 pad, new D-Pad.

Other
Great online system (paid for)
Focused - no web browsers, weather channels, habbo hotel crap. Just gaming.

Bit 50/50 with a lot of that personally.

High res and AA I'm 100% for... IF (and that's a big if... incase you didn't notice :p) the console can render these at a half decent frame rate.

Watercooling? Dear god no. For a start watercooling generally requires maintenance every what? 6 months? 1 year?

I don't imagine mom and pops knowing what the heck to do with that.

Potentially a disaster for anyone but the highend user.

Installing to the HDD? I'm still not convinced with this for the PS3 :o Sure it stops load times, but there's nothing worse than getting a new game home, waiting 20 minutes for it to install... getting into the game and finding out you've got another 10-20 minutes of updates to download :(

It also opens up a whole new world of piracy problems, and we'll be entering the "Limited Installations" route as well surely?

Forcing people to still use the CD/DVD/BluRay(etc) would help a little I guess?

I like the idea of using regular USB peripherals though, but I doubt it'll happen... too much money is made from the licensing to get it exclusively working on the console.

Fair enough but what about a combined CPU/GpU heatpipe/exhaust system like the shuttles, rather than lots of little fans everywhere?

Why? The problem with consoles is that if you buy a nice joystick/wheel/pedals/rudders/yoke you can't use them on consoles (except for the G25, you can with the PS3)

The developers of said hardware work along-side the developer, fine. Opening it up to all peripherals paves the way to people getting mice and keyboards working.
I'm also against full installation of games.
I'm also against 1080p with full AA and AF, the impact on the system is huge much more than people think. Get it at 720p with AA and AF on all systems and a consistent frame-rate is MUCH more important. We've just leaped into HD, leaping into FullHD already would be incredibly foolish.

I like that :)

A proper integrated heatpipe cooling system that was used to cool the whole system.

With one well placed silent fan if needed.

That's backwards. Why install and still use the disc. Whole point of consoles is disc in and play, no installs.

When I buy PC games, I get around keeping the disc in the drive. I've paid for the product so why should I be forced to getting discs out, possibly damaged? Also means having two drives, if I need a burner at the same time.

Also for consoles and kids not using the disc is even more reason for having the game on the HD. Also as said with the amount of data, optical drives are too slow, compared to HD's.

Updated List

I won't mention CPU or Memory speed because the manufacturers know what they need and what they want more than we do, it's all too easy to compare it to PC parts, but it's not the same.
  • Silence.
  • Multi-Format card readers.
  • I would like Hard-Drives as standard and for them to be 250gb-ish because Downloadable Games and movies will be a big part of the next-generation.
  • Stable frame-rates. I'm not too bothered by 1080p as the difference in comparison to impact aren't really worth it, getting a solid frame-rate is massive.
  • More importantly I want Sony to get their console right, actually ask developers outside of their tiny little island what they need and to focus on appeasing the Western World. Get the CPU to Memory right and make it so it's not limiting developers before they start, Microsoft have a very easy setup already so I'm sure they'll keep it the same next-time around.
  • Sony to care about us in every way instead of treating us, and America to a lesser extent, like ****.
  • To release worldwide at the same time (like Microsoft did) and to update the PSN in all regions equally.
I want Xbox's online setup to be free and Sony's to match what Microsoft offers.
  • The biggest thing would be for Sony and Microsoft to ask developers what they want, what they can do with 'x' change and build it on that. Look what Epic did for Xbox360 by doubling the RAM, a massive change. If Sony had only done the same imagine how much earlier the PS3 would have started delivering and I'm sure multi-formats wouldn't struggle.
  • I want both consoles to feature Blu-Ray and both to feature achievement systems. I'd also like both to start from zero again as opposed to carrying over from Xbox360 (but I'll assume I'm in the minority for this).
  • Both need Wireless built in and preferably Wireless-N. They say they want full media solutions... well bloody give us it then.
  • Freeview built in, like the PlayTV system Sony are releasing for PS3 now and the BBC iPlayer and Channel 4 OD service available.
  • An independent gaming disc, not DVD9 or Blu-Ray, something that's different to those and can't be burned onto Blu-Ray discs or DVD's as a way of limiting/removing piracy.
  • Separate gaming devices like the VMU from the Sega Dreamcast to increase gaming possibilities. Perhaps check friends lists, send messages to friends, compare achievements etc.. and have it Wi-Fi.
  • Developers to work with Manufacturers for their top end equipment and have drivers made, such as the Logitech G25 wheel. Limiting hardware and not opening it to all devices removes the ability of having Mice and Keyboards thrown in.
  • Improvement to the online matchmaking systems, make it so they actually work.

Faster loading times reading off the HDD?
Using the disk would ensure you actually own the game I presume?

Faster Blu-Ray drive would do that anyway. Installing on the PS3 doesn't do much/anything to loading times in comparison to the same game on Xbox360.
