"OK chaps, as requested

Firstly a bit of info. for y'all. By default, the sample rate of USB ports (for users of XP) is 125 Hz. For those of a less scientific nature (or the plain stupid ), this means that data from your USB port is interpreted by your machine 125 times per second, meaning a delay of 0.8ms between updates. The vast majority of "modern" mice (and in fact the majority of other new USB devices) are in fact capable of transmitting data much quicker than this, and hence, it is possible (dependent on your mouse) to "overclock" your USB ports so that the sample rate is much faster. My USB ports are currently sampling at 500 Hz, so 500 times per second, meaning a delay of 0.2ms as opposed to the default 0.8ms, a distinct increase in rate.

Why would you want to change this you may ask. Simple....the sample rate of your USB port controls the delay time between you making a movement with your mouse, and your cursor moving. Fairly self-explanatory!

OK, so time for the how-to.

There are 2 files which you'll need. The first is this little app:

http://mackykills.hardc0re.org.uk/u sboverclocking/mouserate.exe

Downloading and running this app will tell you what your USB sample rate is currently set to (not much use if you haven't alterred it yet - but useful if you encounter problems and need to make sure you have successfully changed the value back to default!)

The second is the following app:

http://mackykills.hardc0re.org.uk/u sboverclocking/usbmrs11.exe

This program, when run, will physically change the sample rate of your USB ports. I recommend that you reboot your machine and put it into safe mode before running this, just to be safe, but the choice is yours After it is run, it is required that you reboot your machine, and once that's done, hey presto! Your mahcine's USB ports will now be sampling at 250 Hz. If run for a second time and rebooted again, the program will step up your sample rate fora second time, to 500 Hz. Once this is complete, running the first app again will confirm whether or not the alterration has been made successfully.

Just a disclaimer before you all go off to apply this....

Personally, I have had no problems with other USB devices since alterring my sample rate, however I have read reports of other people having had difficulty with devices such as USB headsets/microphones, and any device which provides removable storeage via USB eg. USB hard drives, cameras, mp3 players etc. So basically, use this at your own risk, don't blame me if it breaks things, you have been warned!

Oh, and one final thing...if you DO have problems after clocking your ports to 500 Hz, running the 2nd program again will reset the sample rate back down to the windows default value of 125 Hz."

Some people later in the thread have said it may be harmful, others have said that a mouse refresh rate is capped?

Any ideas how effective/dangerous/useful this is? If the links need removing, can a don pm me :)

Just connect to the PC/2 ports and increase it through windows itself.
Its easyier.
It frees up a USB port.
It prevents any potential USB problems.
