I have a friend buying a new pc very soon and I am wondering which combination will give a better gaming benchmark.

AMD 3800+ X2 (ocd to 2.5GHz) with a 7900GS

or

E4300 (ocd to 3GHz) with a 7600GT

This is on 1280x1024 resolution.

I think the E4300 will win by miles but im not being very persuasive.

Opinions please!

The 7900GS is the better card so I'd stick with it, the 7600GT might be a bit of a bottleneck for the E4300 at that sort of speed. The X2s aren't bad chips, just on a price/performance basis they are slightly outclassed by the Core2Duos. :)

I had a feeling someone might say that. I would go for the C2d purly because it would make my pc about 2x faster doing anything except playing games :)

Well, you did ask about gaming. In ordinary use the Core2Duo is faster by a fair margin although not twice as fast. I'm assuming that everything else remains the same other than the graphics card, motherboard and CPU.

I'd go Core 2 Duo too. While a 7900gs is a cut above a 7600gt, an e4300 at 3ghz is head and shoulders faster than a X2 3800 at 2.5ghz.

I'd seriously look at the 8600gt instead of either though. Won't keep up with a 7900gs, but when overclocked they beat a 7600gt, plus you've got the IQ and DX10 benefits.

Im quoting these numbers from superpi times :) E4300 gets 19s whereas a 3800+ gets about 36/37 oc'd.
