Your right to copy

Hi.

Am I right in thinking that it is in the law that you can make a backup of any media you own and it is just the selling of copied media that is illegal?

I'm almost certain I'm right. For example, if I had a CD, I could copy it onto a blank disc as a backup.

I have no idea what the UK laws are about this, but here you may copy anything for yourself.

I know that in the UK in the past there was no fair use of this sort. However, IIRC this changed in the recent past.

i was always under the impression that if you own it, you can back it it up but im pretty sure i read in the piracy thread in the game section that this was incorrect?

It would be good to know, I always copy my CD's before I listen to them in the car, I hope it doesn't make me a filthy criminal.

I'm afraid it does, in the eyes of the music industry you should buy one copy for your car, one for your computer and a download for your MP3 player.

If i remember right you are not allowed to change the files at all, so it has to be a direct copy, you cant change formats at all. Also if there is any sort of copy protection, then if you make a copy you are circumventing copy protection, which is also not legal.

I thought it was legal if you own the original media and is used for 'backup' purposes.

I know of a few places that do it to keep the original media out of harms way...

No, they don't bother with prison sentences. They just want your house, your car and your CDs.
