Your right to copy

I think there are EU laws which allow you to make a copy for yourself. Not sure what type of law or how binding it is in the UK though.

I have always thought that;
  • You were legally entitled to make a personal copy, for backup purposes
  • However, It was illegal to circumvent the copy-protection

Therefore, you can.. providing you don't crack the copy protection ;)

More or less although fini was recently quoting points from a fresh case (Promusicae) here which rather suggests that the law is in the process of changing. Which it needs to and I've argued as much, I'm just not 100% convinced that this is the best way for it to go though.

//edit skippy90 - whatever changes occur you almost certainly won't be able to sell copied disks legally at any point. Chance are you'd be fine as you are, with no disrespect intended, very small fry if all you want to do is to take a copy of your legitimately owned CDs for your own personal enjoyment.

The only media I would like to be able to back up and use is Xbox360 game discs. I've had a few drives in them that have had to be replaced due to leaving little marks or scratches on the disc. Then you get a load of dirty disc errors etc.

I dont mind paying for the originals but that is one case where I would actually like to protect my investment.
