WinZip: It's all built into Windows now of course, but in the "old days" it was a real life-saver.

Photoshop: What can you say? Fairly easy to pick up and use for a novice and incredibly powerful in the hands of an expert.

AVG Free: Always been my choice for AV....simple, reliable and plenty of updates. Free!

Ad-Aware: As above.

ZoneAlarm: As above :)

CorelDraw: Used it since it first came out - always get a great bundle of stuff and it's very versatile.

Yahoo Music Engine: Been using this since Xmas and it's great. Really well thought out and very simple and intuitive to use.

3DMark: Now over-bloated and rubbish, but the older versions were great!

RivaTuner: It fully unlocked my 6800nu and for that I'll always love it :)

GameSpy 3D: "lets get on with the killing", Says it all really.

VLC Media Player
WinRAR
Ad-Aware
Spybot S&D
MSN
Windows Media Player
Microsoft Office
Diskeeper
Firefox
Microsoft AntiSpyware (now Windows Defender)

This isn't going to be in order (free software whore):

1. AVG Antivirus Free Edition
2. Openoffice.org
3. Zonealarm Personal Firewall (Free Edition)
4. Winamp
5. Kazaa Codec Pack (with Windows Media Player Classic)

I also like to keep an eye out on sourceforge.net for various utility/specialist programs that I can tinker with.
