I'm sure this thread has been done to death but haven't found anything in the search of late. So thought we'd give it a go at listing our faves. My faves (from top) are:

01. Age of Empires II - sure, there have been sequels, but I find that this RTS instalment never dies! Played it constantly from Win 95 to Win 7 over 13 years.

02. World of Warcraft - great game in the sense that I've met new friends, met for real and still meet up with them. I was totally addicted from late 2005 until the first expansion, then weaned off and eventually gave up. However, I'll always thank Blizz for permanent friends that I've met through it.

03. Final Fantasy 7 - bit of a non-brainer to include FF7 only in my 10. FF8 wasn't such a strong or as involving storyline and Squaresoft didn't port any more FF's to the PC.

04. Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 - I like fairgrounds and themeparks, so this one comes in naturally for me, and I like games where you have to build stuff. You can see POV (like you're sitting on the front seat) on coasters that you build.

05. The Sims 3 - another game where you have to build stuff, plus I love the level of detail that you get in character design. The original Sims 1 game comes in close after Sims 3 mainly because it was a new idea at the time and I adored the Latin music. Sims 2, seemed to be the favourite of the series amongst fans, but for some reason I didn't got on with it. I think it was because I liked modding and didn't find as much content for Sims 2 as I did for 1 or 3.

06. American McGee's Alice - ground-breaking graphics at the time, back in the Voodoo 4 days. Fairly psychological i.e. suspense and surprises. Soundtrack from Nine Inch Nails added to the atmosphere. Great game if you like Harry Potteresque 3D platformers.

07. Warblade - shareware PC version of classic arcade game Galaga with brushed up DirectX sprites. 25 levels for unregistered, 100 levels for registered. Best thing about Warblade are the secrets that you can uncover (bit like finding Easter Eggs in software).

08. Worms World Party - for lovers of Scorched Earth-type tanks games. The tanks are replaced by worm characters with silly voices and overly-powerful weapons.

09. Bejewelled 3 - another shareware game, along the lines of Sega Columns where you match blocks of the same colour. I picked BJ3 because it has the most gameplay variations.

10. Star Wars Galaxy - I only played the demo, but I thought that character design was ground-breaking, almost as good as Sims 3 and both way ahead of WoW for graphics and character styling options.

As you guys can tell, I've never been an FPS person :p I will give credit to Halo though but that was on the Xbox.

I dont like numbers, so i will just list mine randomly.

Metal gear solid PC, kinda requires the other games though, still highly regarded by me however.

Theme Hospital, When it was first out, it was a really funny game, dont know if i would play it today though.

Battlefield 2, was pretty good for me, spent a tonne of time on it, no overwhelming reason, just good.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

The Elder Scrolls series in its entirety, nothing really comes close (Maybe older Gothic games though)

X3 seriesdue to its continuation of a great genre, even it does make my brain fry after awhile.

Mass effect series (preferred before the EA merger), even with some gameplay problems, its overall atmosphere was excellent and I enjoy an expansive Universe.

Halo series, mostly due to the Universe again, but the games are somewhat good on their own anyway.

Deus Ex series, all games are good, still need to finish the second one, not sure when i will bother though.

The Witcher Series are excellent games, 'nuf said.

Those are sorta 10 games, I shall stop there.

ooohh..An all time top 10 is so hard:) I'll need to think about this!

World of Warcraft will definitely be on my list too, although I'm not sure of the position. Have you tried the sequel to Alice? It is fantastic. I think it is better than the original so if you haven't played it grab it in the Steam sale!

Crysis 1...Graphics
Far Cry....Made me build my first pc
Guild Wars.......Although this split me and my mrs up
Minecraft......speaks for its self.
Battlefield 3.....like Far Cry but for the modern generation
Doom....classic
Monkey Island
Dirt 3...i know a console Port but very good
Twisted Dreams Ghiana Sister...loads of fun
Fifa 13....plays sooo much better on PC!

I shall base mine on as released, not modded.

1. Deus Ex
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R : Shadow of Chernobyl
3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R : Clear Sky
4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R : Call of Pripyat
5. Quake
6. F.E.A.R
7. Far Cry
8. System Shock 2
9. Half Life
10. Counter Strike : Source

I'm bound to edit this later, lol.

Hmm...where to place Unreal, Max Payne 1 & 2, Soldier of Fortune 2, Morrowind, Dark Souls and Deus Ex : Human Revolution. :D

Crikey this is tough.

1. World of Warcraft - Whether it was the game itself, or the people I met and friends I made that made it great or the dicking around with random people I don't know but going to be a little while till something tops it.

2. Dota 2 - Every game different, alongside starcraft 2 nothing causes more of a sense of achievement in a win, or disappointment in a loss.

3. Starcraft II

4. Counter Strike Source, kicked off PC gaming for me, 1000+hours easily, met great people again.

5. Guild Wars, same thing as WoW but had more fun grinding stuff.

6. Splinter Cell series

7. Team Fortress 2 - outside CS easily the best FPS on PC in recent years.

8. Mass Effect

9. Age of Empires II - I didn't really play PC much back then, I was probably 7 or so, but I had great fun on this for hours on end yet I sucked horribly.

10. Odd one, but Star Wars The Phantom Menace, if I went and played it now it would probably suck arse but when I was young I loved it, never could get past a bit on tatooine due to being young and sucking but those where the days you didn't get angry at dying and I loved it.

Special mentions - Age of Mythology,Empire Earth,Dark Souls soon probably. Oblivion too, much better game than Skyrim bar the main story which I actually never completed

What would have made it if it had any following, SourceForts, what an absolutely amazing game with a community that dwindled quite quickly, pity there was never an official release.

(Age 19, so no Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate etc been played so missed a lot.)

In no order

Duke Nukem 3D
World of Warcraft
Warcraft 3 & TFT
Command & Conquer up to Tiberian Sun
Counter Strike (all of em)
Dungeon Keeper/2
Mass Effect Trilogy
Soldier of Fortune
CoD 2
Grand theft auto series

Mainly based off games I played growing up, Planetside 2 would be up there (never played the first) just the scale of that game amazes me.

Monkey Island 1 & 2 + Leisure suit larry worth mentioning as well, introduced me to adventure games

In no particular order

1. Elder Scrolls III Morrowind
2. Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
3. Age of Empires 2
4. Metro 2033
5. League of Legends

Really struggling at this point ...

6. RuneScape
7. RIFT
8. Minecraft
9. Mount & Blade: Warband
10. Battlefield 3

No order
1: League Of Legends
2: Metro 2033
3: Deus Ex Human Revolution
4: Battlefield 3
5: Hitman: Codename 47
6: Terraria
7: Counter Strike (All)
8: Deus Ex
9: Left 4 Dead 2
10: Dirt Showdown

I guess, for the effect they had upon me and how much they consumed my life, it would be these:

World of Warcraft
Legend of Mir 2
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War (+ expansions)
Rollercoaster Tycoon series (mainly 3)
Half Life 2
Starcraft 2
Total War series (mainly Empire)
Elder Scrolls series (mainly Skyrim)
Sim City series (mainly 4)
Unreal Tournament series (mainly 2004)

I recognise I've probably played some games of higher quality, but these are the ones that had me hooked and leave the fondest memories.

Picking 10 is too hard, but here are some (random order).

Half-Life 2
Quake 2
Quake 3
World of Warcraft
Mass Effect 2
Deus Ex
Oblivion
Dragon Age: Origins
Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2

Which leaves little room for stuff like Beyond Good and Evil, Diablo 2, KOTOR, Morrowind, BioShock, Half-Life, Portal, Warhammer 40k, Company of Heroes, Unreal, StarCraft, Warcraft 3, Freespace, Minecraft, Battlefield 2, Dungeon Keeper, System Shock 2... honestly my top 10 is more like a top 50 as there are just too many good games I'd really struggle to squeeze into an actual / proper top 10 :p

3. Indiana Jones
4. Unreal Tournament
5. Project Gotham 3/4
6. Battlefield 3
7. Battlefield BC 2
8. Counterstrike

10. Quake

That's roughly the order but I keep reshuffling, it's very hard to get right and every now and then a game pops in my head that I'm like OMG how can I have missed that, like elite has just done. But that's the list you have.

Day of Defeat - Was my first real experience of being in a clan and competitive online FPS. Played to death and still play other games with first clan mates.

World of Warcraft - What an experience. Still haven't found anything that comes close to how I felt about this game. Could literally lose days with it. Not a fan of the way it's turned out in recent expansions, so no longer play it.

Age of Empires - Probably the game that really made me fall in love with PC Gaming, plus the RTS genre.

Battlefield 3 - Was such a breath of fresh air for me, having played WoW solely for many years. Was the game that brought be back to online FPS.

Championship Manager - Anyone who has the slightest interest in football, has probably played one of these. Just another classic, that always made me buy the next seasons game.

Half Life - This was my dad's game, he'd encouraged me to try it because he loved it. Probably one of the best games I would play for a while, I remember feeling so chuffed when I eventually completed it.

Dungeon Keeper - Think everyone had a soft spot for this gem. Bitch slapping my minions about sums it up.

Rome: Total War - My all time favourite of the TW series and the first one I played. I mainly upgrade my computer, purely for release dates of these.

Elder Scrolls V Skyrim - First RPG that I got on with, tried others before and decided it the genre just wasn't my cup of tea. However, I was able to sink well over 80 hours into it so honourable mention I guess.

Max Payne - This last one could be one of many games, but I remember having so much fun with 'bullet time' it just clinched it.

1. Starcraft II - My favourite go to game, nothing compares to the rush you get from a victory and the disappointment you get from a loss... I'm always looking to improve my play on a daily basis and can't wait for future expansions.

2. World of Warcraft - Burning Crusade This expansion was amazing, the raids were hard and I met some really great people and had the most fun time ive ever had gaming.

3. Half Life 1/2 - Not much to be said, two of the best games ever made.

4. Dota 2 - Similar to Starcraft 2 in the sense that it is complex and extremely rewarding to get better at.

5. Binding of Isaac - So simple but so hard aswell. Spent hundreds of hours crawling through the game only to be slaughtered time after time.

6. Ys Origin/Oath in Felghana - Great action games with clean visuals and a fantastic story and flow. Great mix of combat, tricky bosses and Puzzle solving.

7. Super Meat Boy - So fun and so annoying, keeps you coming back for more.

8. Dragon Age Origins - Great game, great story aswell. The combat is fun and challenging and the flow of the game is excellent too.

9.Deus Ex - Great games, prefer the original but would recommend both anyway.

10.Street Fighter 4 - I played this pretty seriously on the xbox (going to local tourneys) but i faded away from it a bit. Still one of my all time favourite genres and the community is great aswell.

In no order:

Theme hospital - Simple yet addictive
Command & Conquer - Revolutionary and bloody brilliant.
Red Alert - Rarely is a sequel this epic.
Oblivion - Fantastic. I loved Skyrim but Oblivion takes a dump on it from a great height.
Half Life Black Mesa - A pretty recreation of the original. Fantastic.
Battlefield 2 - 64 player on open maps in 2005. When this came out it was amazing. I love BF3 but BF2 had more about it. BF3 came out in 2011 and has 64 player maps - BF2 did this 6 years before. I want bigger maps!
Tomb Raider - My Pentium 100 did not like this and I played the whole game with no sound. It was still good.
Mass Effect - A new twist to an RPG.
GTA Vice City - Loved every second of it. The soundtrack was epic and I really thought it worked well being sort-of-ish based around the Scarface film.
World of Warcraft - I did not play this game for as long as most, but I do believe it has an element of brilliance about it. I stopped playing for a few reasons but my main one was that I wasn't playing anything else!

As you can see, for me PC gaming emerged in the 1990s as something fantastic, with a few breakthroughs in the time of broadband (WOW BF2 etc.).
Now I feel 99% of games have the 'of just another shooter' (or whatever) feeling about them. Perhaps I found Oblivion so good because I did not play Morrowind so it was a new style of game to me.
Also, Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 & 2 deserve an honourable mention!

Bigger maps are possible. Battlefield 3 can even support up to 256 players. The only problem with this is that it is not enjoyable to play.

“Technically, we can go to 256, we’ve tried it. We play tested with 128. You’ve got to make a game that’s fun to play. And, arguably, we think that the most fun you can have is when it’s between 32 and 40 players. And we’ve done substantial research into this and tested 128 and that it’s not fun.”
