Your Top 5 Directors?

Also interesting to see that nobody has put Tim Burton. I think his earlier ones were better (original Batman etc) and his work with Danny Elfman has been successful.

No one mentined George Lucus? – Star Wars and Indiana Jones of course
).

Ridely Scott
The Duellists (1977), Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982), Legend (1985), Someone to Watch Over Me (1987), Black Rain (1989), Thelma & Louise (1991), 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992), White Squall (1996), G.I. Jane (1997), Gladiator (2000), Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), Matchstick Men (2003), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), American Gangster (2007), Body of Lies (2008), .

All great films

Stethen Spielberg – needs no introduction but Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) Saving Private Ryan (1998) are my favourites.

Brian Hutton for Where Eagles Dare (1968) and Kelly’s Heroes ((1970)

James Cameroon – Not all of his stuff but he is responsible for some of my favourites including Terminator series, Alien(s) and the Abyss (1989)

Interesting to see he’s got Forbidden Planet in the make

Not enough of a film buff to construct a top 5. I've only followed a couple of directors based on previous work and these are:

M. Night Shyamalan for Unbreakable, The Happening, Sixth Sense, Signs. I love the way this guy tells a story.

Clint Eastwood for Pale Rider, Unforgiven etc. Always feel comfortable sitting down to a film made by and starring Mr. Eastwood.

Leone (Once Upon A Time In America)
Scorcese (Goodfellas)
Ridley Scott (Alien)
Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski)
Hitchcock (Rear Window)

Apologies to Brooks, FFC, Tarantino, Nolan, Eastwood and several more.

I've never found enjoyment from any Quentin Tarentino movie, even Pulp Fiction. Unfortunately I just don't get the fascination or talent :(

Anyway, I shall have a think about this.

It is difficult but I always enjoy films by the following:-

Kevin Smith - Clerks
The Coens - Fargo
Christopher Nolan - The Prestige
Frank Darabont - Shawshank
Terry Gilliam - Holy Grail

Honourable mentions to the following (maybe not for directing as much as creating lasting impressions on me).

John Lassiter - Toy Story
George Lucas - Star Wars
John Hughes - Breakfast Club
Speilberg - Jurassic Park

and

Shane Meadows - Dead Mans Shoes as we need a Britisher on the list.

#1 - Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill)
#2 - Coen Brothers (The Big Lebowski)
#3 - Ridley Scott (Alien) (though I think Alien 3 is the best (David Fincher)
#4 - Danny Boyle (28 Days Later)
#5 - Cant really think of a fifth.

I share this thought. Pulp Fiction is very overrated.

Pulp Fiction is fantastic, first QT film I seen, No film is ever overrated.

Does anyone share my hate for Inglorious ********? I have tried to love it but can't, I feel the trailer was misleading as I assumed the film would be all about Brad Pitt and his gang of Nazi killers.

a lot of QT's films involve back dialogue, flashbacks, and a random mixture of events. One of the main reasons many people disliked Deathproof afaik was because their was too much talking.

I actually don't mind it, because it builds up the tension, you know QT is going to pull off something fantastic.

I never really liked the look of it once it was released and I'd grown bored of the trailer.

Doesn't help that I can't stand WW2 subject matter anymore either. IB just looks like more of the same after Kill Bill and Death Proof to be honest.

This is a tough call, I could add a few more, so in no particular order:

John Ford - The Searchers & My Darling Clementine
Steven Spielberg - Schindler's List & ET
Martin Scorsese – Raging Bull & Goodfellas
Ridley Scott – The Duelists & Blade Runner
David Lean - Lawrence of Arabia & Doctor Zhivago
