Evening all

Long time lurker finally posting! I am in the process of narrowing down a new build with some gear to complement my new 2407 monitor. Max budget is £1300 so there is a bit of room for adjustment on my current selection, any comments welcomed as its been a while since I built from scratch :D

I plan to mainly use this for games, surfing and word/email. If the right parts can be had I will also dabble in a bit of the overclocking malarky thats seems to be popular here :p

Anyway enough chitchat, please comment away.

oh, and depending on the success of the 2900 (when it appears) I may need a rethink on components.

With the exception of a few parts, its similar to mine... It will be great mate :)

as youve already said, wait for r600 before hitting buy, even if its not better it might cause a "price revision" of the nvidia dx10 cards (i hope hehe)

i doubt the price difference will be worth the wait...if youve got the patience then wait but if you dont that set up is perfectly fine...maybe change the hsf for a tuniq or noctua other than that the only change you might make is to the mobo ds3 instead of the asus but as i said before everything looks fine and you dont really need to change anything unless you want to

Welcome to the forums, the only thing you don't actually need there is the AS5, the Arctic Freezer 7 comes with MX1 thermal compound pre-applied. You could also save another £15 or so by going for Geil PC6400 C4 instead of the OCZ as it is on This Week Only. :)

AS5 is worth getting I think in case if you need to take your HSF off.

Change the RAM for the Crucial Ballistix PC6400C4 stuff if you are looking for good OC RAM.

Freezer 7 pro is fine but as said go for tuniq tower 120 or noctua if you intend to max out your cpu.

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

Are both of the coolers mentioned considered better than the ACF7? It will be my first time (be gentle :D ) at overclocking so I won't be going for any world records if that makes any major difference?

Typical, I see the ram I picked has gone up in price today!

Will I need to buy any additional cables for the oem drives or will enough come with the mobo?

Also, as I plan to 64 bit Vista is it worth getting 4Gb of ram?

As I also said I am definately waiting to see the outcome of the 2900 cards just in case they do turn out to be rather good. :p

cheers again for the comments.

Arctic Freezer 7 pro is cheap and cheerful but the tuniq and noctua is the real thing, also look for thermalright ultra-120 (fan not included though) which is the best air cooler IMO. AF7 might be enough for moderate overclock but lower temps never hurt :)

And yes the ASUS mobo always come with loads of cables, far more than you know what to do with so I wouldn't worry about that either.

Why not go for the Geil ultra 4-4-4-12 2Gb PC6400 kit on this week only for £66? Might as well get 2 of these for Vista, 4Gb is not needed atm I think but then I have never used Vista so I wouldn't know, it will defo come in handy in the future though.
