Ok, so now I've ordered an optical cable.. and Im just wondering is there actually that much difference in sound between the supplied direct inputs to the soundcard via the mini-jacks and optical sound..

Obviously there is a difference, but any major noticeable difference?

depends on the quality of your soundcard.

through optical it's decoded by the z5500's and through the analogue jacks it's decoded by the soundcard.

As what he said. The Prelude really shines on these via analog.

The z5500 aren't exactly quality speakers so I doubt you'll hear a difference in quality.

They're not...? I must have poor hearing then... even for £200 or so. What speakers do you think are better quality than those that doesn't break ones wallet...

The thing I love about this speaker system. First the sound quality of course, but I have the PC hooked up via analog to the receiver/decoder, then an optical hub switch to the receiver/decoder, TV is hooked up to it, then the Playstation 3 and lastly the Mac.

Though I don't keep up with speaker systems, as these have done me well for the past 3 years. Bar that the fuse going kaput in the sub recently, 2 AMP slo-blo fuse. Since it's the same fuse that came with it of course.
