Z-5500 Speaker Hiss / Sub Buzzing / Vibrating

Hi,

I purchased the Logitech Z5500 a few days ago, and have them connected to an X-Fi via analogue.

The first thing I noticed was a 'buzzing' from the Sub. It's not hugely loud, but I can definitely hear it. Is this correct? I was hoping it would be a bit more silent.

The Sub is only a light Buzz, which I can only hear when I'm laid down on the floor with my ear to it. Am I right in thinking that if some of you Z5500 owners out there did the same, you would hear silence, or do you too hear a slight buzz?

Also, when using the direct connection, I am getting a 'hiss' throughout all the speakers. When I change the effect to 'Stereo', the hiss vanishes, but the hiss returns on all other effects. What is the problem here?

Something else I have noticed, which is a definite fault. When I am playing a song, and if its a particularly intense (I don't know how else to describe it) sound, the back left speaker vibrates like crazy, and I mean vibrates in that I can hear the actual speaker hitting itself. Is there any way to stop this? It's almost like the enclosure isn't tight or something, even though it is.

Any help appreciated,

Simon

I get the quiet buzzing from the sub as well, i just switch it off at the back at night so it doesn't keep me awake, the sound of the pc drowns it out anyway. The only hiss I get is down to the sound card and normally some messing can fix that, the rear speaker doesn't sound too good at all. Try RMA'ing them if its like that

Well my z-5500s are perfect...i have no hiss from the sub (i use 6chdirect and cmss3d on xfi-fatality to get surround

Well maybe ** mic?

The hissing from the speakers is probably a sound card problem. But are you saying you get no buzzing whatsoever from the sub?

I can only hear a sort of buzz when ever I put *** volume on max and not have any sound playing. Think it is white noise or what ever its called. Never concerned me though.

The hissing ive never had so it sounds like a sound card problem.

Go on the logitech support site and search for known problems with your speaker set. Speaker hiss/interference is a known problem. They will replace your set if it gets on your bits.

The buzz from the sub can sometimes be fixed very easily. Now this may sound daft, but all you have to do is unplug the 2 pin power connection on the back of the sub and turn it 180 degrees and plug it back in. Try it and see if it takes the buzz away. The speaker hiss on the other hand is a known fault with Logitech like someone has already mentioned.

If its a very slight hum you can hear that is normal as it is the power going to the amp in the sub. If it bothers you just turn the plug or switch on the back of the sub off every night.

The hiss sounds like a sound card problem and the rear speaker making a weird noise sounds like you may have the wires the wrong way round or possibly the sub/centre lead connected to the rear speaker port by mistake. Check all connections then use your sounds cards speaker test utility to check sound comes out of the speaker that its supposed too.

Well I returned these yesterday for an exchange, and got a new set today. No more subwoofer buzzing, and no more vibrating speaker! The hiss is still there, but as some have said, I think thats a soundcard 'problem'. (It's only a light hiss, I don't even notice it). So it's all sorted now.

Thanks for all your help guys.

Simon

The hiss (if intensity doesnt change with volume) could be rf interfierence.

In my case it was caused by a cheapo xpower psu in one of my other machines. coiling each speaker cable (at sub end) round a ferrit ring helped no end and theres no audiable hiss/buzz anymore.
