I see there are issues with USB2 and hence installing windows 7 on the new Z170 boards.

Fair enough a lot (most?) have one PS2 port. But surely that means that when installing Windows 7, you would need to keep swapping in/out your mouse/keyboard.

I have seen a couple of comments that some (all??) boards will support some form of compatibility mode in the BIOS.

Does anyone know if the above is true. Especially interested in the MSI board/s.

It's just that I've got a retail copy of Windows 7 and planned to use this when I move to Skylake and then later in the year use my free Windows 10 upgrade when I'm happy the new system is stable.

Found the answer myself by downloading the manual for the MSI-Z170A board:

"For Windows 7, access the BIOS menu
SETTING > Advanced > Windows OS Configuration > Windows 7 Installation
and set the item to enabled, save changes and restart."

Thought there should be a work around.

Thanks for that.

I'll assume here that once you've successfully installed Windows 7, that you just go back in the BIOS and disable this once again?
