Hey All,

System Specs:
  • Gigabyte Auros Elite Z390 (bios F10g),
  • Intel 9600k,
  • Polimatech Megahalem,
  • Team Group 8Pack Edition 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-28800C16 3600MHz Dual Channel.
I have been struggling to get anything remotely stable past 4.6 GHz when I get the impressions that 4.8-4.9 GHz is realistic and few are even able to achieve 5Ghz. Is this about right?

Firstly, I have run prime95 (blend) for an hour at stock settings and my temps peaked at 74C, but typically ran in the high 60's. So I think my cooler is just about up to it, despite being a bit older?

Basic Overclock Configuration

When attempting to overclock I start from bios defaults and making the following changes:
  • Enhanced multicore performance: Disabled,
  • CPU Clock Ratio: 48,
  • CPU Clock Ratio: 43,
  • XMP: disabled,
  • CPU Vcore LLC: Turbo,
  • CPU Vcore: 1.4v.
These settings can sometimes get the system to boot, but usually locks or blue screens.

OC guide and experiments

I have tried various settings in addition to following this guide published by gigabyte (and variations of this guide):
  • Ring Ratio: setting this to 43 (the default) seems to work best. Increasing it to anything near what what the guide recommends (47) and the system will not boot.
  • The guide suggests disabling: Intel® Speed Shift Technology, CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), C3 State Support, C6/C7 State Support, C8 State Support and C10 State Support. Alternatively one can disable Enhanced multicore performance. I have tried both to no avail.
  • VT-d: makes no difference.
  • CPU Vcore LLC: I have tried auto, turbo and extreme. Turbo seems as effective as extreme.
  • CPU VCCIO: I have gone has high as 1.15v (this helps, I can start prime 95 but it locks up).
  • CPU system voltage: I have gone has high as 1.15v (this helps, I can start prime 95 but it locks up).
  • DRAM voltage: 1.3v (recommends 1.2-1.4v, everything else is at defaults, i.e., DDR4-2400).
Questions
  • Despite the temps being reliably no more than 74C with a lower OC, is it possible that the cooler is not up to the job?
  • I have seen posts of people who set VCCIO and system voltage to 1.3v, is this safe?
  • Is there some esoteric setting I have missed?

Thank you,

Goat
