Z68 with GPU + IGP

I know, what is the point of the better Gpu in the K series when 99.999% of the people will not use it cause they bought it to overclock on a p67 board.

I guess it gives a wider market who are interested in their more expensive products. You get the overclockers and enthusiasts buying the K series *and* the HTPC / media crowd buying it just for the improved IGP.

Just a wild guess though!

Why would you use a I3/i5 for HTPC when Ions use a helluva lot less power and do the same job?

I'm waiting to see what ATI have to offer in comparison to Nvidia's Synergy product

im confused about something

do you plug your monitor into the discrete gpu or the on board one for this to work

I saw another site with a Z68 section weeks ago, really disappointed when it was emtpy. :(

I guess it's set up now so that new boards can be quickly added. Or maybe just to wind me up.

AFAIK release date is 12th May. Still surprised by the lack of leaks this close to launch.

Efficiency of a psu can be like 60% which makes 100w used into 166 taken from mains

If I check mains monitor, it jumps by extra 140w if I max the cores for a minute. Total use on idle is a couple hundred normally on i7 setup I think
Add in GPU full load at 60w and its about 400w max I estimate which matches roughly what one of those power calc website says it would be

Correct me if im wrong but one could overclock to 4.5ghz with say a 2600k and enable speedstep so it could still go back to 2ghz or less but it will go back to 4.5ghz when gaming?

doesnt save power afaik

i think it does

i have an i7 920 @ 4.2Ghz and a AX850 PSU

the AX850's fan doesn't spin up unless its under load at around 200-300w

with my i7 @ 4.2 with speedstep enabled it drops down to 2.4Ghz and the fan on the psu doesn't spin up if im doing basic desktop stuff like browsing the net

once i load up the cpu it jumps to 4.2 the fan on the psu will start to spin up

if i leave my pc idling or go back to doing low load work and it drops back down to 2.4 after around 10mins the fan on the psu will stop again

so this means there must be some kind of power saving going on

Full load on 4 cores will use more power, maybe 150w difference Im seeing though thats the hard disks also

I was saying speedstep or altering the speed of the cpu doesnt alter power usage.
It doesnt even seem to help temps.

100% load at 4ghz produces the same temps as 2.1ghz at 100% load
