I bought a gigabyte z790 aurous elite ax with a intel 13600kf.

I also purchased a new rx7900xt but after putting in my pcie slot started getting problems whilst gaming.

I looked into it abit with someone and it turns out the new amd card is gen 4 and my motherboard slot 1 is gen 5.

My question is if I use slot 2 which is gen 4 will it run properly or is it gona provide less power etc.

If you are having issues with the slot being gen 5 then you can go into the bios and set the top slot to gen4. Most of the time it is set on auto and will auto detect the correct pcie gen but maybe not in this case. You could also update the bios and this could fix the incompatability issues as well.

You may be correct with your pcie gen diagnosis or it could in fact be a different cause. Going into bios and changing the slot to gen4 will take no time at all and I hope it fixes the issues.

Only slot 1 is connected at x16 so you absolutely want to use that for a high-end graphics card. As @Haz123 noted it should down-train to gen4, however gen5 is new and some manufacturers are having difficulties with it - you definitely must make sure that you have the latest BIOS.

What are the gaming problems?

I've checked bios it's set at 4 gen and also alsobrun cinebench and heaven benchmark and results were great I think.

Cinebench was 23150

Heaven was 460 fps 11800 score so think everything working OK this is on 1080p monitor at present

I was using starship troopers yesterday but I was getting 17fps and it kept lagging bigtime.
I went on steam and took steam off in background and it now runs at 200 think I found problem.

From what you've described, your motherboard has a PCI Express Gen 5 slot (Slot 1) and a PCI Express Gen 4 slot (Slot 2). The AMD RX 7900 XT is a PCI Express Gen 4 card. So, it is compatible with the Gen 4 slot on your motherboard.

When you use Slot 2, the graphics card should work as intended, although it may not perform as well as it would if it were in the Gen 5 slot.

The main difference between PCI Express Gen 4 and Gen 5 is the bandwidth available. Gen 5 offers double the bandwidth of Gen 4 (32 Gb/s vs 16 Gb/s). So, in theory, the Gen 5 slot should offer better performance, however, this may not always be noticeable in real world usage, especially in gaming.

It's also worth mentioning that some motherboards have additional power delivery options for the graphics cards that can help to improve performance when using a Gen 4 slot.

It's also possible that the other components in your system like the CPU, power supply, and cooling solution may limit the performance of the graphics card, and it might not perform as well as it would on other systems.

In summary, you should be able to use your AMD RX 7900 XT in the Gen 4 slot of your motherboard without any major issues, although you may not see the full performance potential of the card.
