Popped out this evening, shut down the PC before leaving. Started her again and noticed some windows updates, so thought what the heck.

Installed updates, restarted, no sound..

Volume up? Yep, in windows and on the headset.
Correct device selected for playback? Yes, and i can see the volumes moving in the volume mixer when i have a video on.
Uninstalled the updates? Yep, no change.
Tried a different headset or speakers? Yes, exactly same problem.
Checked the connections or tried a different port? Yes, triple checked and i've also tried using rear and center speakers.

Headset is Turtlebeech and has a USB connection which drives the amp(i assume). I can hear static when i turn the amp all the way up, on both this headset and the other(again Turtlebeech headset), but i can nothing at all on the PC.

Tested the headsets(yes both) on another PC, no issues at all. I've also moved the USB connection to another port, but this has not helped either. Also went into the bios, disabled audio, booted, then went back and reenabled, again no help unfortunately.

In the process of removing and reinstalling audio drivers for the motherboard. I did actually remove the audio device via device manager and let windows install it again, but this hasn't helped, so i'm going the manual route.

Any ideas chaps? I'm going to dig out an old sound card next, simply to rule out the sound dying on the board.

It could be really unlucky timing, or one of those updates has fudged something.

My evening game time now spent problem solving.. :(

Looks like it is the sound, just tested an Audigy 2, and it works no problem. :(

I'm going to retest sound again once more with onboard to be sure, but pretty certain i've checked every possible thing i can think of, including selecting the correct audio device(which i've switched a couple of times, hoping that'll spring something into life).

Might be time to switch to another board, seems i'm not the only one with *audio problems* on the sniper board.

Ok update, strangely, no volume anywhere, except if i click configure for the device, the test plays back sound....

Now i'm boggled, no sound anywhere else from the onboard sound except when running configure(i completed, clicked finish, but still no sound with videos, the browser on when sliding the volume bar in the mixer). EDIT: Had a thought here, the app is tied to the default device set at the time, they needed restarting before they pick up the newly set device(i know that, and should have realised that sooner - was too busy working myself into a panic).

Possibly a software issue caused by the windows update? Hmmmm...

Guess i'll reinstall windows at the weekend and use the Audigy 2 until then... :/

Strange, very strange. Gonna be a long weekend, sigh... :(

lol.....

Now it's magically all working again...

Don't look a gift horse..... *i'm off to go play Planetside 2* ...

I'll keep the Audigy 2 in place incase this happens again, i'll let you guys know if it plays up again.

tried system restoring to before the windows updates? could have affected the sound in some way
Always turn off the restore, it's never done me any favours in the past. Everything important is on separate drives to the OS(still loathe installing though, the updates take a while on 20mb virgin with their bandwidth caps).

P.S. Thanks for the assistance all the same guys, touch wood it remains working.. :)

All been good, have no idea what the fudge caused that issue, i'm always on the watch for it though and reboot a bit more regularly just to see if i can replicate the problem(audigy still in place just incase).

Hot weather here right now, if there's ever a time when the system is under more strain it's now and it's not missed a beat, back to being rock solid and working 100% 24/7.

Peace.. :)
