Z97 or z87?...

Can I use a z97 with 4670k? Or do I need to use the refresh CPUs out next month.

Also is there a benefit in z97 boards over 87s ?

It'll work fine, you'd be better getting the Z97 board, newer technology so will hold it's value better in the long run.

Z97 is also touted to run the new broadwell chips, out next year. Z87 won't.

In a similar position OP, currently rocking a z87 and 4670K. Going to be keeping the 4670K but will be getting a nice little Z97 itx board when there's a full range about to choose from. Along the line maybe broadwell CPU.

The main thing with z97 is it supports SATA 3.2 which means double the speed SSDs when they are avalable.
