Hello all

Long time reader - first time poster :)

Did i miss something or did zalman cpu coolers just dissapear off the shelf ??

every build ive made over the past 10 yrs has included a zalman heatsink and cooler (make of that what you will, ive never had a problem and the temps have been good, even on my Q6600)

have noticed the Gelid Tranq cooler seems popular, but any other alternatives for air coolers ?

Thx in advance all :)

There are lots of alternatives it's mostly down to what you are trying to do with your system. Are you going for heavy over clocks or just a mild one etc etc.

apologies, forgot the obvious :)

will be going for a decent overclock, nothing supreme.

Currently got my Q6600 2.4 clocked to 3.2 under air, so fairly routine stuff.

Looking at getting an I5 (as i understand it, I7 for gaming is a little pointless) 3.3 so will be looking for around 4.0, if not a little higher.

tempted by water - though that'd be new territory for me, and ofcourse theres a whole other forum for that debate :)

i'm looking for around the same overclock strain. so will be watching this thread. the tranquillo should be fine for 4.0 overclock. I just really dont like the look of it, and it also forces me to have low profile ram. :S

the all in one water systems from antec and corsair etc, are they worth trying ?? (i know this really should belong in the watercooling forum)

or should i just go for a proper dedicated loop kit, eg one of the EK kits ??

back to the zalman situation, did OCuK just stop stocking them ? or is it a zalman supply issue ??

i'm not adverse to new coolers, just a query

as for the existing CPU cooler, will be keeping the current rig and passing it on, so needs to be a new one.

Zalman are definitely still around, as a Google search will show, but they do seem to be a bit slow at updating their range.

A lot of folks didn't like the silly 'hook & clip' arrangement they used for attaching their 'flower' style coolers, and their successors do indeed seem to be in rather short supply at the moment.

I have actually being trying to source one myself over the last few days, but will post details of my quest in a separate thread, rather than hijack this one!

thats cool, ive not seen many about on various other sites either

i didnt mind the hook & clip system, as i had a flower on a previous rig, the cooling was good, and the variable fan made noise minimal, but i agree there are easier ways to mount fans.

going back to the RAM issue, i was looking at the corsair vengance series, which do have "large" heatsinks on them, so might be an issue with low profile tower coolers.

I've been using a corsair h80 enclosed cpu water cooler, best move i ever made for overclocking to full potential, and they arent too much extra than the high end air coolers price wise, pretty easy installation too, and you dont have a huge cpu cooling block that would get in the way of RAM or anything else for that matter. got a phenom x6 clocked from 2.8 stock and oc'd to 3.62 with each core at 11-15 degrees, usually 30 idle, and not much higher on full load

The problem with a proper loop is the extra cost for all the fittings, the coolant etc then messing about with leak testing etc so it's not worth it imho though other people will tell you otherwise.

This is why I bought my Antec Khuler 920, it is water cooling without having the above mentioned issues.

i appreciate the additional cost with the dedicated loops as apposed to an all in one system, how are the differences in temps between the two. Obviously a dedicated loop will be cooler, but hows the cost / performance difference?

as i re-read the above before posting, it dawned on me this is a poor question, as its all dependent on setups, componants, cases and ambient temps :S

kinda gone off topic from the original thread, so apologies etc :)
