Greetings all,

I recently bought the Zalman Resarator1 V2 external water cooling kit, which is currently cooling my Q6600 and 4870.

I am looking into getting another 4870, however I am not sure if the Reserator would be able to support the CPU and the two 4870s without overheating etc. Some advice would be appreciated :)

Off the top of my head around the 30-40 mark. I cant remote desktop to my pc at the moment so ill be able to post more accurate temps when I get in this evening.

i wouldn't do it fella, if you were i think you would have you get another rad. Ive got the res 1 v2 and my temps atm with an AMD 64x2 Athlon at 3.2 with a 8800GT my temp float around 35-45 CPU and 41-50 GPU having something else in there would be more of a strain on the motor. The motor isn't brilliant in these ive had it now for 7-8 months and the performance has dropped quite a bit. if i were you i would get an external motor or something to help cope but the temps will be quite high.

Get a second Res1 and run two loops or one loop with a different pump.

@acid death - if by performance drop you mean temps, then it due to increase ambient temps most likely. A 2-3 degree rise in ambient can equate to double that in core temp.

It's a passive system, expect higher temp that air cooling - especially in spring/summer.
Only time a passive system will out perform an active one is with air-con / external use.

In the fear of being stabbed in the neck with a fountain pen, I am inclined to agree with you on this one Mr Pesci, reference to Casino, sorry I could not resist! :p

The res1 has gone up in price some what since I bought mine, so I think ill go down either of two routes. Install a better pump, or just replace the exsisting cooler on the new 4870 with a quieter one, as the standard ones a pretty noisy. Not ideal but what is in this day and age.

Any recommendations for a pump and quieter cooler would be appreciated.

I've heard a few things about the Res1 pump, but can I ask how you know? - the flow guage on the Res 1's is not exactly great.

It's hard enought on my Res2 and that has a spining water wheel (rmp can be counted - just)

@BigAl second hand they are still around £50
Would never buy a new one - massively over priced and almost always under sold.

A Twin Res1's system would woop a £100 active waterloop any day, just don't tell anyone or the value will rise ;)

i keep my room at a steady temp thanks to air con, ive noticed a decline becuase the temp on CPU hasn't been dropping as quick as it use to also the wire inbetween the switch and the motor itself is very sensitive if i move it in a direction it'll stop the motor dead. i do realise that me doing stuff on my pc will obv change the temp on the cpu and water but the idle temps have changed by a good 10C. it takes more and more time from going from a heavy load to idle for the temps to drop.

That doesn't sound good at all... pop the top of the res and with a clean knitting needle/long straw/spatular/old plastic hanger - swish the water round a bit to check for algee. Never had any problems with crosion in my loop but algee was a real pain.

If it's all clean looks like it's a dodgey pump (or connection) - new pumps are avaliable for elsewere in the uk.
But you'd be better getting rid of the pump and useing an external one.

linky to a thread about running two Res1 in a loop

yerr, if i were to shot of the pump i would definatly get an external one. But i tried to get at the pump apparently the bottom screws off but no amount of force that ive applied on it will make it come loose, it's why im basically going back to air.

Hmmmm, a second hand res1, hadnt thought about that. Im definatley not paying 190 odd quid for another one, so I think ill pick up a second hand one off ebay or somewhere. Thanks for the link to the thread shadowscotland
