Hello,

Would the above work on my abit IC7-G northbridge fan?

I plan to replace my intel oem heatsink and fan, the m/board northbridge little whinney fan thing and also my radeon 9800 fan. But first things first :)

cheers in advance

Looking at pics of that board i can't see the mounting mechanism for the chipset, so you need to check its using pins and holes rather than little wire loops that some boards use.
You will need to check that its not to tall and won't interfere with your cpu heatsink.
You also need to ensure that it gets some airflow, either from a case fan or the cpu cooler, and that it doesn't go above 50.

If for some reason it doesn't fit you may be able to cut bits off untill it does, although i can't see why it wouldn't.

hi thanks for this...

i havent had time to check my PC as of yet :p

but... i did a google and found some close up pics... i think it will fit as it has mounting rings

no harm giving it a try i suppose apart from parting 10quid. Better than whinney noises :D

I think it won't work with mounting rings, only pushpins. I bought one and never used it and its no big deal. I'm sure i'll find a use for it somewhere. I seem to remember that zalman do a gold heatsink for boards with wire loop mountings...

Edit: Here it is. And heres the list of chipset coolers. Comes with sticky thermal adhesive stuff. Akasa do one with a fan aswell, i've tried it and its not suitable for chipsets with a small core in the middle, as it falls off!

Yeah it looks like ring mounts.
So you need either a heatsink with a thermally adhesive pad, or you can use adhesive thermal paste with any heatsink.
You have to be careful with it because usually once its on its on for good so if the heatsink doesn't work very well its almsot impossible to remove it. This isn't a problem with heatsinks with a sticky thermal pad such as the Akasa one. If you slow the fan down on that one it should be fine, although as i said if the chipset has a small core it will probably fall off. You just have to try it really, remove the current cooler and see what the chipset is like.

man thats bad that the zalman that i wanted wont fit... really thought it would have

but im going to replace my intel oem heatsink and fan first, as im still not sure what is causing the loud noises... that or the northbridge or my radeon 9800 oem fan... so one step at a time i guess :)

Stop each fan temporarily and listen. Scythe Ninja + nexus recomended for best performance/silent heatsink.

Edit: What chipset is it?
I'll try and find out if it will work with the akasa chipset cooler for you...

I recomend an ac silencer for the graphics btw.

I Have the zalman on my IC7 , used the stock retension clip too , certainly quieter than stock and cooler too. Very easy to fit too.
You need stock retension clip and 2 split washers with notches filed in them , slips through centre of the zally and the washers are to make up for the extra height.
You wants a piccy ?

hey,

which zalman did you get? if you can you post up piccies? :D

i tried stopping my fans... the noise is certainly from the oem intel fan, then the NB fan... but different noise stages. But certainly want to iron it all out

just checking prices and will be ordering from OC... gonna be getting this...

Zalman ZM-2HC2 Silent Hard Disk Heatpipe Cooler (SY-006-ZA) x 2
Zalman CNPS9500-LED Aero Flower (Socket 939/754/478/775) CPU Cooler (HS-015-ZA)

and...

Zalman ZM-NBF47 Fanless Northbridge Cooler (HS-023-ZA) if it fits... awaiting pics, but im sure this should fit from the pic i posted in the link above....

plus looking at this

Zalman VF700-CU LED Quiet Copper VGA Cooler with LED

for my radeon 9800, aint planning to upgrade PC as i know these days g/cards run on PCI-E, cant afford it yet.

Crap piccy of my IC7 with zally on the northbridge , hope you can see , because my photo skills are poor :)
Looking at that earlier photo , your mobo looks to be a later revision , different to mine , so you may not be able to use the stock clip.
I did mention it was a crap piccy didn't I ?
And the gunk on the zally heatsink tips is uv paint ( not recommended )
