How do,

Just after a bit of advice, I love Link to the Past back in the day (played through again recently on my SNES) and was a big fan of WW and Twilight Princess...

I've just preordered a 3DS with MM, but never having a N64 I never played Ocarina - So my question is (considering that I don't have a massive amount of time to play games any more) do I need to plough through that first?

I'll play it some day either way, but do I need to do it before MM?

It makes more sense to play OOT first as you get an idea of the play mechanics and some minor back story for Majora's Mask IMO.

Both games a great and I have many fond memories :)

Pretty much all the Zelda series are stand alone games and, while there may be very tenuous links between them, you can play them in any order without missing out on anything.

OoT is the bast game ever, play it now!

Don't want to hijack the thread but I'm tempted to pick up OoT on 3DS but I have just sold windwaker HD after it becoming a chore of overcomplicated fetch quests, I loved it up to the point of hunting the triforce shards and it offered no help so I sat watching people play on youtube to know what to do (not my idea of fun but maybe I'm too old and missed somthing)

When I previously had a 3DS I completed ALBW and I loved every minute if that makes a difference.

I'll play it some day either way, but do I need to do it before MM?

As many have already said, Nope. With Zelda there are occasionally some nice references to the events of previous games (before and after in the timeline), but you can play them in any order. MM may take place right after OOT, and there are some nice references, but the structure and events are largely unrelated and quite unique.

You should put OOT at the top of your list of games to play though.

All the Zelda's are the same story :p

This video series by GameTrailers is well done and does a very good job of explaining everything:

Timeline: The Legend of Zelda - Part 1:
Timeline: The Legend of Zelda - Part 2:
Timeline: The Legend of Zelda - Part 3:

Make sure to watch all 3 parts, or you could just end up even more confused.

The videos contain spoilers obviously, but well worth a watch for anyone who has played many of the Zelda games yet are unaware how the series is structured among direct sequels and main instalments that take place generations apart.

Nintendo made up a timeline recently as a lot of the Zelda games weren't designed to fit in any particular timeline, and the ones that were had little thought put into the links.

Game Theory made a good video on it.
