I'm hoping to land a 5950X on launch day for a brand new build. Coming from an 3rd gen intel PC so I expect to see a little bit of a performance boost :D

Thing is I'll be buying an X570 motherboard too, but I'm not sure how to go about the BIOS update to make it Zen 3 compatible. I already asked Overclockers if they'll update BIOS for me when I purchased but they said they would be unable to do so.

Can someone please explain how I go about doing it myself? BIOS requires at least AGESA 1.0.8.0 as far as I'm aware, but if the mobo has been in stock and on the shelf since before that was released then its not going to have it and won't be compatible with the new CPU. Also I think there is a further BIOS update to be made available on November 5th too.

I've never updated BIOS before so this is all new to me, but I'm not afraid to try do it, just that it's very confusing that you need an update to be ready for an update!

Is there a blatantly obvious solution I'm not aware of?

Motherboard I'm looking at is Asus Crosshair VIII Hero.

motherboard forum if I were you

I was under the impression than a lot of boards currently shipping did have basic Zen 3 support - and in any case, pretty much any board you'd want to buy can be flashed from USB without the CPU.

If that's the case then I'm laughing!

Is the process with USB fairly straightforward? Download the update to the USB, fire it into the right mobo port and flash away, a simple as?

You need a motherboard that supports bios flash without a CPU installed MSI, Gigabyte and ASUS support that on many of their models check the specs before you buy

What you do is copy the new bios to a usb pen drive, plug it in a specific port and press a button on the MB whilst powered on, the manual will explain the exact steps

  • BIOS flashback will give you the most flexibility.
  • Without flashback you'll need to use a supported chip (or get a loaner Athlon from AMD- but this can take a while so I don't recommend)
  • Motherboards have started to be produced with the required Agesa version in late August/September. If you don't buy until closer to the time, you may avoid this faff if you're lucky :)
