So i am thinking about swapping my XPS 13 for a G14, but i am on the fence between the new 4070 with 32gb and the 2023 4080 with 32gb

Price wise they are vastly more expensive the UK over the US, but i feel it ticks the boxes for a portable system with gaming capabilities while travelling

Anyone got either one of these?

Yes i have an older 5800HS 32gb RTX3050 system, i hardly game, but it is my only pc and it has been really good. I just use it for web browsing crap and basic work stuff (invoicing and spreadsheets etc..) Just lives on a table, but it still feels fast and is dead silent when not gaming.

Biggest difference is the new one in G14 guise is a proper light weight gaming ultra book at sub 1.5kgs. The G16 uses the new Intel ultra cpus but for the G14 there is little in it between the 2023/24 Ryzen. CNC machined aluminium chassis too inc keyboard frame and improved cooling.

There have been loads of reviews on YouTube on the G14 in the last few weeks from all the main channels. Consensus is, it's the best 14" ultrabook/gaming laptop on the market and by some margin. Except for the blatantly MSI sponsored channels where MSI is.......

However, on the G14 the RTX4070 this year does seem to be a slightly lower wattage version so the gaming performance gap between the 2023 RTX4080 and 24' RTX4070 is significant.

I would go for the 23 Ryzen 9 with RTX4080 and 32GB memory available for circa £2,250 model GA402XZ-N2002W

Very hard to compare because there are loads of variant's of laptop GPU models.

I would bet my house they are using some high efficiency variants of those GPU`s with lower power to keep heat down.

The high power variants are usually only found in much bigger and very expensive laptops.

And their advertising often does not mention it either.

I would just go with the 4070 one.

Loads of YouTube reviews comparing old and new Zephyrus. Jarrod'sTech has got plenty of benchmarks as an example.

The G14 is an Ultra Book so is somewhat compromised in either 2023 or 24' guise if raw gaming performance is truely sought, in which case ASUS Strix/Scar is for that. However it does do ultra book gaming incredibly well vs the competition plus productivity and media / creativity due to nvidia studio benefits of RTX.

None of the Ultra Books get full power 4070/4080 but the 4080 (125w) is better as there is only a 90w 4070 in the 2024 G14 so broadly comparable to a c140w 4060.

Dig through a few more reviews and the 24' 4070 is only a few fps ahead of the 120w 2013 G14 r9 4060 version which is significantly cheaper than either.

You know, I had potentially overlooked the XPS13 element a bit too much here.

The XPS weighs c1.2kg and is pretty compact. Having owned XPS 13s (2021&22) the change to a 2023 G14 would be pretty noticeable if you value the productivity / sme focus of the XPS. Depends how much you value the size/weight/design.
