Reading a story on the Beeb this morning by some Sports director at Spurs who claims that Zizou is the equal in terms of tecnical ability to Maradona. Personally I think that ZZ Is propbably one of the best players of his generation but sometimes he needed players around him to do the dirty work like a Deschamps for France or a Makelele ar Real. Whereas Diego could turn a game on his own. I watched a documentary on him last week and he pretty much turned Napoli into a powerhouse of Italian football single handedly.

So do you think ZZ is actually close to Maradona in terms of being one of the all time best players in the world

Agreed.

They were both genius (geni, plural of genius, erm, uh....) though massivly different players. I think that Maradona would do more with the ball and Zidane more likely to pass it but that probably reflects more on how differently the game was played between the two players' times.

Though they both seemed to make the impossible look really simple.

Maradona will probably be remembered for longer simply because he was in the news a lot, even after he retired, whereas Zidane (from some interviews I have seen) appears to be a very quiet lad. He'll always be immortalized in England after what he did in 1986, I mean that incident has been aired at least every four years since....whereas what Zidane did in 2004 wasn't as contraversal..

I agree. Zidane is a Legend. He's shone @ Club and Country and had the true skill of a genius. He doesnt cheat! I would deffinetly put up there with the all time greats!

Yes, I do.

In fact, the fact he's not a cheat puts him higher in my eyes.

In the interview I saw with Maradona he was speaking about the hand of god goal. Basically said that English players are propbably the most noble of players whereas the majority of the teams try and use every advantage they can do(by the book or not)

I think Zizou is a world class player in his own right and a product of the French youth system in the 80's. However as an overall player I think Maradona is the better

The French sweat-meister was undeniably the greatest player on the planet at his peak, so yes he deserves to be ranked amongst the all-time greats.

Never really noticed it before but Maradona was extremely one footed. Just notoiced that after seeing clips of his goals.

Take his second goal against England in 1986. Ball never left his left foot!

Zidane - Best player ever IMO.

When i think of Zidane i think of a Great world class footballer.
When i think of maradonna i think of a drug taking scum bag cheating *******.
Nuff said i think.

Different era.

You cant say one was better as both where amazing for there generation.

Its the same with Pele he was getting kicked about every game in 58, he learnt to that style of play.

You cant even accurately compare players in different leagues, never mind different era's the italien and spanish style of football is very differnt to ours, and it can often flatter players, they get over here and dont perform. Just as the style of play in different era's can. They are both amazing players, but cannot be compared.

True, but he was a bit good wasn't he,
Zidane lacks stregnth, pace and any defensive attributes, but that does not make him any less amazing. Now a gerrard/zidane cross with a bit of theo wallcot accelaration, now that would be a player, it would not happen though, no player can do everything, (some do a decent job of trying though).

Zidane in his pomp was awesome, easily the best player of his generation - it's impossible to catergorise at the best ever as a comparison can never be made - Puskas for example - scored 83 in 84 at International level, 154 in 179 for Real Madrid in the 50's / 60's. Incredible statistics, and surely a legend in his era, but incomparible with today's game, hence I don't think it's possible to name "the Greatest Ever". Pele is lauded for scoring 1000 goals, but he only played in the Brazilian and latterly US leagues, with many of those goals counting from his games for the Brazilian Army - how can he possibly be compared having never tested himself in the bigger leagues over the course of a season, rather than a 8-10 game World Cup campaign.

I also think people who overshadow Maradona's brilliance by saying he was a cheat and a druggie - Paul Gascoigne is considered a hero, he was a drug taking, alcoholic, woman beater, as was George Best.

The Hand of God incident was still the fault of 4 people - the referee, the linesman, Steve Hodge for an appalling backpass, and Peter Shilton, the 6'+ goalkeeper being outjumped by the mini Argentinian.
