That headbutt was performed with great power and technical aplomb. As Materazzi approached, Zidane lined the target up, then proceeded to put his entire body weight into the headbutt. The full power of the blow was felt by Materazzi, resulting in him falling to ground. Zidane knew that Materazzi was a big and powerful man and that it would take a head butt of the highest order to bring him down, which he delivered perfectly.

When teaching fightmoves to students and demonstrating the headbutt, I can see Zidane's headbutt being used as the showpiece.
