Hope someone can help with this, I've posted on the Photography section as well but may be better here.

My friend had a problem with his PC on the weekend and lost/corrupted the LT Catalog file. He has the backups that LR does (on a different drive) but none will extract (which seems pretty strange that the problem is with all the files)

He uses a PC and I'm on Mac so he sent the zip files to me to try and sure enough I have the same problem.

The error I get is:

Unable to expand "CAT-20180228.zip" into "Desktop" (Error 2 - No Such file or directory)

Any ideas? not sure if this is the best place to post question but in case its a LR thing I'll try here first :)

I've tried a zip repair and the repaired file also dies at about 98% when trying to extract.

Thanks!

try extracting to a separate physical HDD and not on the C: drive, probably will not work, but worth a try as trying to extract to C:\Desktop means it will be extracted to temp first (all on the same HDD) , so using a separate drive may help, but unlikely.

Many thanks for the suggestion, I've tried the files but unfortunatly still get error extracting around the 99% mark :(

Possibly a bad usb cable or external drive if it's corrupting files.

I'll have to check with him if the Backups came from an external drive or from the directory LR makes on the main drive. He's quite organised so my guess is he's copied the backups onto an external drive and deleted off the main drive to save space so you may be right.

presumably you cannot extract individual files or index it, with whichever of the zip file salvage utilities you tried ?

none of the deleted files still exist on his harddrive ? for the future, can repeat steps to establish what had gone wrong

Where in Pembs are you based out of interest? :)

Milford Haven :)

It's just one file, the zip is about 500-600MB and the but when the file is uncompressed it would probably be in the region of 1GB I think.

From what I understand he had an issue with the catalog file (guess it got corrupted or something). LR creates a regular backup of the catalog file when you close the programme or at whatever interval you choose. He had about 8-10 backups but none work. When I first tried unziping them it would run and say extract completed almost immediately but no files were extracted. I tried repairing the zips and that seemed to be successful and I could see the file that would be unzipped but when extracting it would get at error very close to the end.

Really strange that all backups are corrupt.

Have you tried using the extract without confirmation option in winrar? (I think there's a keep partial files option too). Sometimes that will manage to extract at least part of the archive.

I haven't tried that although would that work basis only 1 large file? I will try tonight though.
